Hello, I have a B7100, from some time in the 70s, the wire loom caught fire so I joined the wires manually, now the engine wont start, it smokes at exhaust but that's all, the new glow plugs seem to work (12 v is getting there), tried starter fluid and heated up the intake manifold, and bled the injection system. When I disconnected the fuel pipe from the fuel pump to the injector pump it seemed to barely pump out fuel but there is pressure there when I put my thumb over it. Any advice would be appreciated.
Christian.

Quick advice is don't use starter fluid - it will damage your engine!

More detail for the B7100 folks: Where did it catch fire, and what was the cause?

It was starting and running prior to the fire? What is different besides the wiring? Anything changed or removed? How long was it laid up? Fuel filter? Fuel tank clean? New diesel fuel?

Wiring on that model is simple, the only safety is the clutch pedal, and if it's cranking there isn't anything else electricly that the engine needs to run.

If there is fuel getting to the side of the injection pump then it's probably fine, that system does not move a whole lot of fuel.
Does it have a clean filter and when you remove the filter housing and turn on the fuel does fuel flow out of it?
Reinstall the filter and housing, leaving it loose, open fuel and bleed out air out of housing then tighten, open bleeder on side of injection pump, crank several times to get all air out from line between filter housing and injection pump.
Crack all three line nuts on the top of the injectors, wide open throttle, crank till you get clean non bubbled fuel (this can take a lot longer than most think), tighten line nuts.
Turn the key in reverse, does the glow plug indicator glow red?
if it does not , you need to service it as it's not sending juice to the glow plugs on pre-heat.
Yes you can still get power to the plugs on crank as it does not flow power through the dash indicator but without pre-heat working they will not get hot enough to work properly.

( open the post and never sent! - I agree with NIW - filter issue?)

Wow.....you have several potential problems!:)

First......you do not need any electrical power to start other than the starter itself, the injector pump is not electrical.

YOU have a decomp knob yes? HOLD it back, throw the throttle all the way forward - turn key, should have fuel a spittin'.......about 15 seconds, then stop.....wait a minute and repeat. IF you do not have a good bit of fuel then you have a much bigger problem;):)

I bet you had the dash apart and pulled the decompressor cable. Check it at the valve cover where it connects to lever. Its likely activated. Someone else had the identical problem a month ago.
