So I have a L1802 that I got for free (a person wanted it out of their yard). It had been sitting in the weather for a long time. The person that gave it to me was not the person who originally set it out and he did not know what was wrong with it. Well I have been pulling it down and draining fluids to determine what may have been the issue. Today I pulled the hydraulic pump suction filter and saw a couple pieces of metal. Cut the filter open and found lots of metal. Anyone have a thought of what it may be from?

Could this be machining debris? After looking more it seems like debris from drilling, etc. Has anyone else seen this from their pump suction filter?

It could be if no one ever changed its filter since new, but someone that's had these apart can give you better advice. I wouldn't give up on it yet.

This seems awfully extreme to be machining debris. Does the tractor run? If so, what does it not do? Someone left it sitting because of something. In order to find out what that was, it might be necessary to get it serviced and running to see what part of it failed. With luck, it's just normal debris and a clogged filter. I have doubts but whatever it is should be repairable and was the reason you got the tractor for nothing. Great deal for you.

I've been a long term member of one of the other tractor forums and over the years there have been a number of posts showing filters with machining chips, spirals, etc... caught by the filter. Many far worse than the pictures shown here.

It seemed to be more common on the older models and of late there hasn't been much reported on newer models.... Perhaps they have improved their post machining cleaning process.

Yep, that is machining debris, probably stuff caught in the paint (the orange / rust colored flakes) (yes they paint the insides of the gear cases) and is giving it up over time.
It's also possible the filter was not changed as often as it should have, or worse yet they either recycled the fluid or used contaminated fluid.
All in all your probably fine as that's the filters job, and there is not a lot of complicated devices / options on that model of tractor. ;)

Thanks for the comments. Talked with my father and he said the same thing about the debris and paint as Wolfman. I did take samples of the first bit of oil coming from all drains to look for water metal pieces and pretty much found none. I'll say I was really worried when I first found this.

Looks like I will keep trucking along in the rebuild. Any opinions on panels I should pull to do inspections on the transmission? Looking for broken gears, etc? Still looking to see if I can find the reason it was set up. I may just have to do what rentthis said. Get it running then see where the problem is. Thanks again

Following, very interesting that a ~35 year old tractor has this amount of swarf and debris in a filter, guessing it has never been changed. Let's hope it got some water in the fuel once and was left in the paddock and died, and is recoverable, you have to have a win sometimes eh!
So this 1802 is a Kubota engine mated to a Daedong transmission?

I don't think the filter was ever pulled off. It was a real bear to remove. Hopefully it is just a fuel issue. Yup a Kubota engine to a Daedong transmission.
