I take it if I install these flaps I should mount them on this side of the blade so the pressure is pushing on the plate

Google snow blower flap mod. It will better articulate what Im driving at. I did it to my 20 year old Husqvarna. Distance increased and less clog-ups. Now it has a new engine and patiently waits in the basement for its moment to shine should the tractor go down....

Max already checked it out just need to get time to do it

What's the best rubber to use its going to have to be something rigid maybe a truck muflap or conveyor belt even better I'm guessing

Thinking it might be prudent to get pieces of flap the same size, i.e. weight and same with bolts nuts and washers to avoid any possible balance problems especially if later you decide to run at a higher than 540 pto speed.

That's a pretty big gap between the impeller blades and the housing. I'm thinking you're going to see measurable improvement with rubber seals installed on them.

Could it be the location of the fan blade when the photo was taken?

It looks to be up into the discharge section of the fan scroll and thus appears to be far way from the housing.

Check the blade to housing clearance close to the lower bottom of the fan case. You might find you are about to do a lot of work when actually the clearances are reasonable

Update: Picked up a mud flap for a dump truck about 3/8" thick and very rigid and a 1/8" flat bar 1" wide and some 3/8" bolts with washers and nyloc nuts.

Cut 4 pieces roughly 4 1/2" long and drilled the flat bar and blades on the blower.

Installed the rubber by checking the clearance at the bottom of the drum (6 o'clock) and then bolted them in. They were a little tight after tightening the bolts so I took a reciprocating saw and trimmed the rubber till is just lightly scraped the drum.

Reinstalled the chute with some polar grease and reinstalled the winch and cables.

Tried it last night with a very small snowfall and there is definitely a difference but tonight we are getting 30 cm (about a foot) with 50km (30mph) winds so the real test will be late tonight early tomorrow.

There was approx 1/4" of a gap at the 6 o'clock position of the blade/drum.

Happy camper now :)
