Any of you own an airplane? Thinking of buying or building in the future. Bonus points if yours is STOL

Have you considered a gyrocopter? I don't own one anymore but many years ago I used to co-own a gyrocopter. It was a blast until the other co-owner crashed it. Fortunately, he was not killed but he was one hurting person for awhile. I was looking at some of the new ones that cost about $100,000. They aren't what they were 30 years ago.

I am thinking more traditional. Super Cub, Rans S7, or Kitfox SuperSport. Something that I can put on floats.

I would be willing to bet that Mr Flienlow (how low?) is thinking more along the lines of an experimental such as Kitfox, Rans, Just or Zenith. Something that fits into the Light Sport category that exempts the PIC from the PP medical requirements and the need for an A&P if they complete the 16 hour Repairman's Course. Sport Pilot license, bush tires/floats and Western Washington state out his back door. Am I getting close?

To answer your question: No, I don't have one yet. I am getting very close, though. I have it narrowed down to two companies, three models. Have visited with the owners of the company I am most interested in a handful of times.

As much as I love and appreciate our Kubota, it does not 'set me free' when I run it! :D

On edit: Guess I should have typed my reply quicker. The OP spilled his own beans before I could hit 'Submit"......

Gotta love them little float planes. I have friends with small puddle jumpers.
I live across the river from the float base, the former owner's son is a good friend and exceptional pilot. Manitoba, land of 100,000 lakes gives lots of places to land. My last couple trips were to rice lakes and fishing lodges. Would rather be in a small aircraft than a big ol jet airliner. Cant help you with buying advice, but i wish you well in your quest.

I am a Private already, and those RV's are BAD @$$. Had a guy take me up in his 200HP RV9, and flip me upside down. Fun time.
I will say that I am not sure if I want $80k worth of parts lying around my garage getting dusty, and I don't know the level of difficulty it would be to build one. RVs are around 4000hrs, and the fabric models are around 2000hrs. I met a guy building a Ch750 that was "quick build" and he still isn't even close after 6+ years. Not to mention most LSAs don't have much of a useful load. Not sure if a certified SuperCub would be a better choice. Truth is, I know a lot about houses and cars, but even though I am a Pilot I don't know the short comings and pitfalls of Aircraft ownership. - I am not a guy that likes surprises. A dentist I know had a Cessna 421 that went in for an annual. 150K and 2 AD's later he had his plane back

Attached below are pictures of my 1st airplane. The plane is a 1946 airlone aircoupe. There are 6 boys in my family and 5 of us have at least a private pilot's license.

I have a plane. It's an antique. I got it from a friend as a gift for helping him moving his heavy cabinets as he worked on them.

No physical or license required!:D

I guess the first two questions I would ask are these: What do you want to do with it and what are your payload requirements.

If there is a LSA that fits your mission, you will be greatly reducing the FAA's involvement in your life. That alone is a big cost savings. You will still have to have an Annual Condition inspection but, you can perform your own maintenance saving some more money. The weight limit on wheels is 1,320 pounds. Many of these aircraft have an empty weight of less than 800 pounds. That should give you some idea of payload. Keep in mind that a Rotax 912ULS (four stroke) with 100 HP will be burning less than 5 GPH @ cruise. That will save weight and money, as well.

As for licenses, many PP's have 'downgraded' to the Sport Pilot rating. If you have a clean bill of health, the only requirement moving forward is that you are healthy enough to have a valid Drivers License. This must be done BEFORE you have any black marks on a FAA medical.

Experimental, LSA and Sport Pilot rating have some limitations. Really worth a look though. Especially if you don't want Uncle Sam to be your copilot.

How do you down grade a Private?

don't show up for your next medical ;)

define your mission profile and find the plane that fits that, then join the builders group for that plane, ask questions. you CAN do it

edit to add:with experimentals, if you built the plane you sign off the annual airworthy inspection.
if you did not build the plane you can do any work you want but the annual must be signed by an A&P (no IA required)

Dont own a plane but did learn to fly in a Cubcrafter SportCub. I learned in Gig Harbor. Have you checked out Cubcrafters website? I thought they usually had a few used ones sitting around.

I used to work with a guy long ago that owned and worked on his own plane. He was the type of guy that wouldn't take a few minutes extra to check if a pipe was properly threaded or grooved. He constantly had leaks from under tightening or poor craftsmanship and asked me all the time to go flying with him, no thank you was always my reply.
