Our 9-year old 5040 GST with about 1000 hours on it lurches and grabs when in gear. Our mechanic seems to think it's a bad pinion gear in the transmission. Transmission has to be disassembled to diagnose the problem. Not sure it's worth $3,000 to find out plus more to repair or whether it's better to trade it in now.

Has it been serviced, trans oil and filter?

If so what kind of fluid did you use and how many hrs on the oil?

What is the trade in value with it broken, IF they'll trade for it? Keep in mind, they're going to assume the worst, might be $4500 to fix it, if the trade in value was $10k, they'll deduct $4500 from it. Many dealers won't even trade for them if they're broken, but it's worth asking.

would a craigslist sale be an option? I don't know. Just throwing that out there.

There are some wholesale buyers that buy a lot of dealer trade-in's and from what I've seen lately, they're paying quite well for them. So it's always good to at least ask the dealer about it if you're serious.

The 5040 has been serviced regularly by an experienced, qualified mechanic; not sure what kind of fluid or hours on the oil, but can find out.

GST's are pretty picky about what fluid is used. Cheap crap from places like TSC or wally worked won't cut it.

Another thing to think about, some fluid is not compatible with wet clutches. You have a wet clutch pack for a main clutch. I have seen some fluid that would make them slip and other fluids that would make the clutches lock so hard they would rip the lining off the disk.

I would want to know exactly what has been used in my tractor.
