Think it is electrical but don"t know where to look. Looked at the safety switches and they are ok. On the dash it says it needs the pto disengaged and clutch depressed but that's not it either. Any ideas

I would check that PTO switch .....one more time! :)

wiggle the pto lever and bounce the clutch pedal and see if anything changes

checked the switch on the clutch pedal and its ok. Disconnected pto switch and that doesn't work either. Noticed that the pto light is on when I try to start it. Doesn"t matter if pto switch hooked up or not. There has to be a electrical box that runs all this stuff.

I'm not familiar with your specific tractor - but generally when it comes to safety switches, they are wired in series and must "complete" the circuit to start tractor.

So if you just unplug it, that is an "open" circuit so tractor won't start. You usually need to unplug the switch and put a jumper across the two terminals (to complete the circuit).

Maybe your tractor is different. Good Luck.

check fuses first. Fix any that are broken.

Secondly, there is a ton of wiring on these tractors, and some of it is underneath, and partially exposed. So if you're in anything rough-a.k.a anything that the tractor is supposed to be used for-it's entirely possible for a stick or limb or tree or rock, or whatever to get up into the wiring and either damage it, a connector, or the harness itself. Or sometimes even break the switch(es).

Usually it's simple. The L40 series have been great tractors aside from a broken wire or connector here & there. I say simple because the ECU/panel "thinks" that the PTO is on and the clutch is not pushed in. So you need to find out why. Once you find it, it'll start and run like normal.
