Sorry for the rookie question but what is the basic difference between the BX, B, and L series machines?

Very basically, the differences are weight and frame size. All three COULD have the same horsepower; BX (23hp or 26), B (23 or 26), and L (25).
More weight means the tractor can more efficiently transfer horsepower to the ground, or lift better, both at the 3 point hitch (3PH), or front end loader (FEL).
A BX2670 will not be able to pull or lift what an L2501 can, even though the BX has similar horsepower.

You may have noticed some of these models have similar engine horsepower, however that is only one of several factors going into a tractor's ability to accomplish work. The different models reflect varying sizes, weights and power levels. Choosing which model is best suited to one's needs is largely a function of what kind of work and how much of it needs to be done, and the acreage involved.
Spending even a few minutes at a well-stocked dealer's lot would give you a seat-of-the-pants impression of the differences that cannot be conveyed by simply reading the specifications.

It's like compareing a Ford ranger, an f150 and an f450. They are all ford trucks but each one is bigger, stronger, and heavier duty than the preceding one. You would'nt want to try to tow a 5'000 lb camper with a ranger and driveing an f450 back and forth to work in the city is too much truck.
