My brother has been involved with the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) for years as a racer and instructor. He volunteers time for the Long Beach Gran Prix as a safety observer and cornerman who's job is to assist the EMT he is paired with in case of an accident. He also instructs at clinics put on at Willow Springs raceway for people with high performance cars. He helps them find the edges of control of their vehicles and teaches them how to drive them safely. In case you ever wondered, yes, some people who buy $600,000 super cars are scared to death by their power.
For service with the SCCA, the L.A. chapter offered volunteers a private tour of Jay's shop, which is adjacent to the Burbank Airport. I used to taxi by it almost every time we left Burbank. My brother got to go.
The tour was headed by one of Jay's long-time mechanics and friends. It is everything you see on TV and more. And the people, including Jay are just like little kids who love their toys. The work they do there is amazing.
Someday, that whole collection should go into a museum. It is, as Jay puts it, the "More Money Than Brains Club." I am glad somebody can afford to do that.
