L3800 Dash Panel Removal - Tach Cable

Need to replace my Tach cable, did a search for previous posts and came up notta.

Any tricks I need to know? Anyone done this before?

done a few. Remove the steering wheel, then the screws in the panel assembly. Remove the cable from the engine and cut the wire ties so that the cable will be allowed to be pulled. Then pull the dash out, unscrew old cable, screw new cable on and reassemble.

Seen one or two that the cable was just loose, fell off of the tach on the back of the dash. Might be your issue?

The cable is broke on the engine end, about 1 inch from the metal end that engages the engine drive. I have the new cable, may try and work on it tonight.

You may want to borrow a steering puller. Auto Zone will loan out tools.

Tightening torque on the mounting nut when re-assy will be from 22 - 36 ft-lbs.

Besides the steering wheel and boot, you'll want to remove the throttle grip to get the rear bonnet off if needed.

Got it fixed last night. Not that big of a job, just need to know how the pieces of the puzzle go together. Some pictures attached.

There are four bolts that hold the steering/dash shroud on, two are obvious on the front, two more can be found after the hood is raised, picture with ratchet. Steering wheel and throttle knob have to come off. Three wire harness connectors need to come apart then shroud will come off. Four bolts hold the instrument panel on, cable easy to get to once removed. I took the opportunity to clean up the clear cover to the panel, four clips hold it on. Also included a picture of where cable broke, that is the engine end. Only have 300 hrs on tractor, hope this one lasts a little longer.

Made this out of a harbor freight puller there are three holes inside center of steering wheel and it was tight had to use impact
