BX1870 what tiller?

I just bought a BX1870 turf tires, 48" deck,no FEL, being delivered this Friday. I wanted to buy the last tractor i would ever need and have something to work the garden, scrape the driveway, cut grass, well. I chose this model thinking it would manage these task.
I started looking at tillers and think i should have gone up to the 23. The salesman said a 42 inch is the biggest i should run, but it seems 48 inch seems to be more readily available. land pride makes a 48 inch tiller that says its rated 15-25 hp. the 1870 PTO is at the lower end of that range.

Can this machine run a tiller? what tiller matches this machine? what is the right thing to do here?

i have sandy loose soil on a plot that has been worked for 8-9 years.

The salesperson is likely be cautious about selling you a new item that might be returned as "used" and he'd have to sell it at a lower price.

I think 48" should be fine with your soil. My BX2200 operates one that size with ease and no engine lugging. Be sure to run it at full throttle.

You might consider getting a middle buster to break up the soil before tilling. It makes for much less wear and tear on the tiller.

You can also make a subsoiler out of the middle buster by replacing the blade with a chisel point. Some brands come with a point for changing out.

Working the soil first with one of these will lead to impressive results after the tiller goes through a few times.

BTW, King Kutter brand of tillers gets lots of positive comments. LandPride is nice but compare the prices.

Actually the BX1870 is under that range at 13.7 PTO HP.

So look for the smaller tiller.

The spec sheet online says "Tractor HP Range" for 42" and 50" between 15 and 35 hp. So, I'm interpreting that as the 18hp of the diesel engine and not the PTO hp.

Actually the BX1870 is under that range at 13.7 PTO HP.

So look for the smaller tiller.

I have a bx2370 and a 4' seems about right. Some said to go for a 50". I'm not sure it would have mattered. It does big down here in Indiana in some of the topsoil we have. I would certainly entertain the idea on the bx1870 of getting the XB version of the king kutter. The KK2 is a bit heavy IMO.

On one that small, I'd get a 42", but be sure it has the side shift feature. That allows you to set it to cover one tire track, and then line up the next pass, with your previous wheel track. Also, the next year, you can slide it to the other side, and till the garden, in the other direction, so a ridge doesn't build up, from tilling one way, all the time...

I didn't see where anyone referenced the owner manual. The implement limitations are there. For the 1870 the tiller limits are 42" and 375#. The weight limit may be more critical and would probably eliminate the LandPride 1200 series.

I use a 42" tiller on my BX2370 and it has no problem with it. Ed B
