Hey Guys,

Got a friend looking for a tractor and he was looking at the Cabelas brand (TYM Tractors). I know they are a Korean made tractor and was told they make the Mahindra's over 50 hp. You can buy a 55hp, FEL, Enclosed Cab, heated and air conditioned, stereo, etc. for around $30k. That's about what I paid for my Kubota L4701 with FEL no cab.

There are things South Korea does well and equipment building is not one of them!

They are great till you break anything, then good luck with warranty, parts or service. ;)

I personally have hit a brick wall trying to repair older units that they have discontinued making parts for.

TYM's are made up of a culmination of different parts and engine suppliers and there is nothing consistent about them.
Makes it really hard to train a tech how to service a tractor that comes with 10 different engines. :p

WOW reading the other forum for a few minutes made me remember why I like it here, wayyyy to much mud slinging over there! ;)

No kidding on TBN & that link...pretty crazy stuff. I really looked at the Cabelas/TYM prior to getting the BX, actually would have purchased over a 1025. They were very similar and nowhere close to the price/performance of my BX. I have to say glad I looked long term and didn't go with the we are committed from Cabelas.

Love OTT, so helpful and educational.

Yah... was about to make the same comment. They took a potentially informational thread and shot it full of holes.

Folks don't like to get out of there comfort zone on that sight either. If it's something outside of the box, they won't except it, and will run the poster through the coals saying they are an idiot.

Back to the topic at hand :D I've been a little leary of the cheaper non name brand stuff. Mahindra is a popular brand around here and the dealers are established and knowledgeable about there products. And just recently started seeing three LS dealers popping up. The local LS dealer was also the closest cub cadet dealer. I started asking there mechanic questions about them when I was in getting parts for the cubby. And other then telling me they were good quality tractors, they couldn't answer much of my questions.

Me personally, I would be leary of how long Cabelas will support the TYM brand after they stop selling the tractors. At least here, there isn't a TYM dealer in the state that I know of. Might make it a challange for getting parts and service down the road.

My dad didn't listen to me and bought a 50 horse cab tractor from Cabelas along with a slew of implements. He got a good price and they have good service, but when something breaks, it takes weeks to get parts in. I tried and tried to persuade him to get a Kubota, but no luck. When it was time for me to buy another tractor, he tried to get me to buy Cabelas and I said, No such luck. haha, it's orange for me. My household is Kubota and Farmall.:D

Thanks for the input guys. The Cabelas in Allen Texas is the one that he was looking at the tractors. ALL Cabelas are fixin to stop selling the tractors. They say they will service them but I asked a friend of mine that works there and he says their tractor mechanic quit and they were looking for another one. Doesn't sound like a good situation.

I am a good Cabelas customer but was not going to buy a tractor from them and certainly will steer my buddy away from it as well.

Many Thanks

I was in Cabela's this week here in Fort Worth and had a chat with a salesman while looking to see if I could get any deals on implements - mostly a PTO driven spreader. No such luck. He said that at times the were getting 30% margin on tractors, and just could not compete with dealers of other brands at <10%.

He said the problem now is they can't get any additional inventory, so he has tractors he could sell, but can't get loaders for them, which is critical to the sell.

FYI - they had the King Kutter spreader marked at $399, but doesn't matter, no in stock and can't order.

You guys are all stating the reasons why I also avoid JD, Case and other products and why Kubota are favored by me.

Parts: Kubota has a GREAT parts inventory and they can overnight you almost anything. Furthermore, Kubota will often sell you the PIECES of something, not the whole part, unless you want the whole thing. Example: A customer has an Ansung backhoe that he broke the hydraulic fitting off of. Kubota will sell you new packing, piston, cylinder, etc for their backhoes but we had to buy the whole cylinder for this Ansung.

Design issues/revisions/parts sourcing: JD, Case and Cabelas (apparently) are famous for changing models split serial numbers, having multiple options within a given model or serial #, or sourcing components from various vendors. I have serviced many CASE machines where I was sent double or triple the filters needed because they weren't sure which ones would fit that specific machine. I've had that same problem only a handful of times with a Kubota out of hundreds of machines I've serviced.

Resale: Go look at Kubota compared to others....Kubota retains value MUCH better...there is a reason. Pay more up front but you recover more if you upgrade or sell. I have only been able to afford used Kubotas so quality and resale are a bigger deal to me than someone buying new with a "warranty".

Lastly, remember Kubotas are Japanese/American design and built. Japan is well known for quality while Korea, China and India are spotty. We all joke about "Friday" cars or machines that have problems...imagine a country where every machine is made on a Friday?

Too many people buy with their wallets and not their brains. I've been thrilled with the quality and design of my Kubota's, as well as the resale...they have a customer for life.

I stopped at the Cabelas in Rogers, MN today and talked to the tractor salesman. He said they found out right after Christmas that they were exiting the tractor bus, if you need an implement you can still get them and Woods will warranty. Pretty good deals and he would order in if paid in full until all the tractors are gone. Sounds like big deals for those willing to risk it, told him I went with the BX and he said good choice.
