Well, my son did pass his test, and he doesn't have to worry about the car starting. It never gets cold!!!:p.

I'm amazed at how clean it is.

Will need brakes shortly, and I've decided to do them - a new thing for me.

Rotors and pads at ~$125 is something HE can afford! He will also get some experience, along with the 'ole man!:p

And for Diydave and Lilfoot - I misspoke - battery right front - but still looks pretty easy. First thing I looked for AFTER I bought it...

Airbox and filter pretty simple too, on left side!

The other shoe dropped - - - the car insurance bill.

All I can say is WOW - $1,400/year without collision. Policy just renewed - doubled with the kid and car over my '13 Silverado and wife's '12 Equinox.

He's High Honor Roll at school - so that should help 10%....

Skeets - you're right - good Dad buying car, etc. Did the same for his older sisters, but never saw an insurance bill like that!!

I had my own car, insurance, and responsible for all of it, including gas, maintenance, etc.

Re-thinking that "good Dad" thing.....:p

Our daughter was around 1,100$ per year for the pt cruiser. She Had to work and pay it. Deal was she didn't pay, the car got parked.

She got behind two months. She talked to us about it the first month, and we let her slide.

Second month she said "Screw it!!!!! I'm not paying!!!". My wife said "o.k.". I didn't say a word. I sent a tow truck for it and had it towed to the house from school :cool:

Car was on blocks with the tires chained to a tree when she got home, and it stayed that way till she settled up.

She had the money for the insurance both months. She just didn't want to part with "her" money. Boy she was mad when she came out of school and found her car gone :p:p She never missed her insurance payment after that though  She laughs about it now.

Wife any I pay around 1100$ bucks a year for full coverage on a 2010 Mazda 3, the 09 gmc 4x4, and liability on a 16ft trailer. Just went up 200$ a year for full coverage on the camper.

Have to trade it in on a 1 ton flatbed truck. Tag it for the farm. Probably cheapest auto.ins. you can buy for a male, unmarried, under 25.

Funny you mention that 25 year old thing.......for some reason now it is 24....

my middle son turns 24 in a week - place a car to my insurance guy (know him 28 years) ......got him OFFF my insurance and own his own, he travels to work and back - 1.2 miles in a POS 93 honda civic.......under $500 ........my insurance for 2 kids (my cars) and then my POS and truck are a whopping $2800 a year.......no tickets and nuttin......I had to drop all coverages except the truck, told them, you hit a deer or pole....you are SOL !!!! IF you ever do the math to JUST drive a car to the store.....with gas, oil, upkeep and ins, it is staggering what it cost PER MILE!!!!

ok- 'nough ranting......:p:)

With multiple car insurance policy the kid driver got applied to the most expensive car. My insurance agent walked us thru breaking in to policies. The Wife's and my cars. Second policy for the kid's car. Then she added the kids to our policy as deferred drivers so they could drive our cars w/o the big insurance hit.

I considered the cheap kids car as insurance for my wife's and my cars. Truck, chain and few questions made me the dad to pull cars out of ditch, mud, snow banks for my kids and friends.

You all need a Michigan no-fault policy to know how expensive car insurance can be. I would be happy if my numbers were as low as any quoted so far. Michigan has the highest rates in the country. We all love no-fault and attorneys.:mad::eek:

This is old, but just an update.

So far, Buick has been good, without issues.

He just paid for his first car service, an LOF. He only put 2,200 miles on it in 5 months. Car was off just a cup or so from full.

When I was his age, I did that in 6 weeks!

Tire wear hasn't changed - so still guessing they were run soft while ago.

He's away for American Legion Boy's State this week, so did front brakes tonight. Probably do backs tomorrow night.

My first time doing brakes - the pads were fine, but the rotors bad. The slide pins on the calipers were real sticky, so guessing that's why?

This is true! But the reason why is MCCA fee which as of July 1st goes up to $160.00 per year, per vehicle. $480.00 just for the three and then it's another probably $40?? for both of the collectors vehicles.

I did some quick math work in my head $2800.00 year is what I have to pay for a 2014 Impala (new body) 2014 Silverado crew cab 4x4. Under collectors insurance: 2004 Alero coupe and 1970 Cutlass supreme coupe. Plus we are currently paying for the boys 2004 Grand Prix (newly licensed driver) so that rig is insured with him not listed on any vehicle.

I am not looking forward to that number when we list him on the GP only.:(

Hearing all of your insurance prices, I thought mine was a little high but now not so much.
Because of business I have big insurance polices, 2 mil liability and everything else to the max, I'm at $1008.00 for 3 vehicles and 4 trailers a year.

Sticky guide pins will do all kinds of things, warp rotors from excessive heat, heat pads enough to seperate from backing plates. I clean pins up and apply brake lube (used to apply anti-sieze).
Make sure boots arent damaged and brake pads move freely in the mount. If they stick, which they do i usually sandblast to clean the scale off. A file works too. Rear needs a disc brake retracting tool to wind the piston in. They are cheap and worth every penny considering the fight if you dont have one. Mine is a threaded style and needs a 3/8" drive to rotate piston while pressing in.

That is if e-brake cable connects to caliper. I mark piston and rotate it in about three turns, indexing it to caliper. Windin it in all the way just means more to adjust back out. Once re-assembled, e-brake needs to be cycled (vise grip on lever is easiest) to run piston back out so it will function properly. Piston is out enough when it will grab rotor when lever is pulled. Its necessary to cycle park brake to keep rear pads adjusted.

Hope this helps.

Frank - that helps a lot! As a newbie, I did know there was a trick to the e-brake, but not much more.

Thanks so much.

I found a you tube video once for the backs, and will look for it again.

I have several friends that either own shops and/or work at them. One place I stop at occasionally on Saturday mornings to "supervise" for a short while, and have a coffee. The coffee is always bad, but I expect it after 25 years.:p

I have a lot of respect for the knowledge and abilities you guys have.

Thanks again.

Another point, along with lubing guide pins, caliper brackets need be tight, i use locktite on every mount.
I think i have done 20 brake jobs in the last couple months, 1/2 needed calipers/mounts.

Up here, brakes take a beating, and some gravel roads eat entire cars after a few years. (Calcium chloride dust control).

Another few points, check master cylinder during the process, while pushing pistons in, fluid needs to go somewhere, sometimes it will prevent piston from retracting.
While cranking pistons in,watch the boots, if they twist-try and free them up and if fluid is oozing you need a caliper.

Its difficult to remember everything at once, every job has different kinks.

I did get that right doing the fronts last night!

I went for the purple Permatex brake lube product for the slides, etc. Seems to be good stuff. Expensive, but good per the reviews.

Thanks again.
