What do you use to plug a hole in a tire?

Ran across theses pictures today. When I bought the B7100 it was in a state of neglect.

Here's a picture of the front tire. They put a carriage bolt in the hole, with a flat washer and a nut on the inside.

I didn't save the hardware when I fixed it.

Looks like if they had gone to the trouble of breaking it down so they could put a bolt in it would have been easier to put a patch and fix it right.

Different it is, outside the box, maybe... effective long term... questionable.

I can honestly say that in my 41 years on this earth, I never thought to myself to fix a hole in a rubber surface that needs to hold air with a bolt...

I guess I must not be a very imaginative thinker....

When you need your machine and are away from repair facilities, you do what you can to get yourself going. Their temporary repair worked and I expect that the tractor was used to complete the required task.

It probably worked so well they just didn't get around to pulling it down and having it professionally repaired later.
Sometimes the latter happens frequently and all the makeshift repairs build up and add to the general overall neglect of the equipment.

Got a screw in my car tire one time, i tightened it to stop the leak.

My preferred is the plug/patch. But burn plugs work in a pinch until it can be prifessionally fixed.
Tube cost just as much as paying a tire shop to patch on small tires.

I prefer to do it right, but a field expedient repair is not out of my grasp. I had a beer bottle bottom gash a 2-1/2" slice, in my Dixie Chopper's 25-12X9 rear tire one thursday morning, with half a dozen lawns to mow on friday. Took 2 pieces of metal, drilled 4 holes in the pair, took the repair plates to the inside of the tire, drilled the same set of holes in the tire, 5/16" bolted one on the inside, one on the outside, filled the tire with Slime, and got my work done the next day... I lucked out, in that the slice happened midway between cleats. It lost a little air during the day, but that's what the hand pump on the truck is for...
