Got lucky and found a used bx2360 only 1.5 hour drive away from me.

Today I happened to be in town and looked for a box scraper/blade at the farm king store. I kind of suffered sticker shock, it was a tarter 4 foot wide red in color for $599.

Good thing I'm not in a hurry so it looks like it's time to go to the farm auctions and hope I'm there on a snowy day or something.

Mostly going to maintain my gravel driveway so maybe just a rear blade would be enough?

Parker,

can you be more specific with the model and price? When you say bigger, you meaning like feet or 6" increments ? A box blade will go up in price as the metal gets heavier and larger. I bet the "RED" ones were a better build - little more heavy duty than the "YELLOW" ones. With a 2360 - you dont want to get too big to begin with.

A rear blade will work wonders and will be cheaper too - however the box blade does a MUCH better job when it comes to "filling" and "scraping" low and high spots. If all you need to do is a gravel drive - the back blade may be the way to go - get cha 5' or better.

There are a lot of threads on driveway grading, you might want to read some of those threads to get an idea what others are using and why. You will want to consider the size of your tractor, your skill level, and the driveway conditions when evaluating the implement you might want to buy. I use a grading scraper, a rear blade and my front end loader to good effect in maintaining my sunken driveway in the woods. The grading scraper does an excellent job providing a smooth level driveway. I use the rear blade to crown the driveway so the water runs to the edges. The front end loader provides some leveling in hard to work area and digs pits along the driveway to drain water off.

As mentioned, lots to consider. I no longer use a BX for driveway maintenance, but when I did, I used my 5' back blade twice in five years and 4' box scraper the rest of the time. A back blade just wont do much to move enough material to help on mine as freezing and thawing leave ruts and high spots. On some a blade would be great, just not mine.

some are now making their box blade with a way to adjust the rear wall's blade height essentially allowing it to act as a box blade OR similar to a plane.

Yup, you can modify an existing Box Blade in this fashion too with a 'dump door' just above the cutting edge. Been considering doing just this with my new LP Box Blade. For the cost of a couple of hinges and plasma cutter/welding materials, it's not a bad idea. Of course, warranty goes out the window though.

You can MAKE a cheap grading plane with just angle iron and chains if you have a basic welder. There are a few designs like that on the web...
