We purchased our L355SS this past january and it has been runningh fine. Today while it was idling I heard a metallic pop in the engine and it starteed skipping and spewing a lot of white smoke.
Does anyone know what would be causing this or where I should start looking? We are new to diesel engines.
Thanks
Jim

Check the oil, is it milky? check the coolant, is it oily?

loosen one injector at a time, does the sound and running get worse, or no difference, with one particular injector? Once you have done a few of these checks, post back...:D:D

Water in the fuel tank can cause white smoke, rough running, and engine knocking. A few drops can get into an injector pipe and the engine can sound like its coming apart. Drain the tank into a container and look for any water drops in the bottom.

Generally, white smoke means water in the combustion chamber. You may have blown the head gasket.

If this is the case you will start loosing coolant - but don't rely on just checking the coolant "reservoir tank". You need to check the coolant level in the radiator (when it's cool of course) because the coolant reservoir tank will not refill the radiator if a vacuum can not be created in the cooling system (and if you have a blown head gasket, your coolant system probably won't be able to create vacuum as the coolant cools off).

I hope it is something else. Good luck.
