I have a 3-point frame which attaches to the linkage on my small Kubota B6000. Looking at the simple cranes on sale, it seems that they are merely a bar with a hook welded to the top of the frame, angled upwards, plus a bracing strut, so I am thinking of modifying the frame to turn it into a crane (possibly making the crane arm detachable).

Has anyone made one of these? If so, can you suggest suitable dimensions for that bar - I am thinking of 80mm x 40mm, with 4mm walls. Is this underkill or overkill - would 60mm x 40mm x 3mm walls do....? Thanks!

are you thinking about one of these? Boom pole - or a modified version of this?

I have a boom pole on the BX and it works well except if you front have enough weight on the front end,,, coff coff.. Though if you were to weld a crank like off a boat trailler and run a 1/4 inch steel cable to a pulley hung off the ead loop you could use it for a crane,,, IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH WEIGHT ON THE FRONT END ! And use you can use them to change motors and lift stuff pretty high,, you just have to be careful cause the higher you go the less stable they become,, Oh yeah they are good for hanging your deer from to skin too :D

Diddion, either size (80mm or 60mm) would do, but I don't believe anything thinner than 3.5mm would be strong enough. In fact, I'm noodling ideas of a boom pole for my B6100 and I wouldn't be comfortable going any thinner than about 4.75mm.

I'm leaning toward round tubing rather than square even though that will add complexity to the fabrication. However, I think I want to make it the longest I can, and have sufficient strength to hold the greatest load my tractor could move so I will over-engineer the boom.

Please keep us updated on your progress!

And keep in mind what the picture nazis say, "Without pics, it didn't happen!"

4 tubes 3/4x1/8 will give you a very strong structure with less weight.
Measuring the cross section gives 12-13 mm of wall strength.
I used two runs tack welded for snowmobile ramp and it carries a fairly heavy machine.

Im considering welding a three point bracket to my rolling shop crane. Makes it multi-purpose. And easier to move.
