Two years ago, I had an IRS agent come to one of my stores checking for dyed fuel in road vehicles. Never had that happen before. I use clear fuel although I do have dyed fuel tanks for off road. I recall seeing a sticker on a gas station pump that said "due to current diesel fuel shortages, some fuel may be dyed". If you use undyed fuel as well as gasoline, for off road, you can recoup the tax on you tax return. That requires a lot of record keeping so I just let it go.

During the last hurricane in NJ all of the terminals ran out of diesel. We were allowed to deliver HS heating oil as diesel for the emrgency. Was the only way to keep trucks in the area running
We can get a credit for using on road stuff for off road. There is paperwork to fill out, and we do it. For us if we have a truck loaded with clear diesel (3,000 gallons) but wind up having to use it for off road, or heating oil (hurricane emergencies) then we get the taxes back (after a 2-3 month wait). But for us it's $1200+. for 100-200 gallons we would just eat it

So all the cars and trucks that had to use that fuel have the stains from the dye -- how can they be distinguished from the scofflaws who burn ag diesel in their vehicles?

They got a free ride for 3-6 months. After that its back to normal

Emergencies are emergencies. Nj got hit hard from that hurricane. But its not something that happens every year

My daughter's in-laws have a place on the NJ shore. Was there this summer for the first time.

You're right - you guys got hit hard by Sandy.:(

So many places were still getting built or re-built, several years later.:(
