I'm building me a ballast barrel for my L3901 with L525 FEL. I was going to make it 1000 lbs but I wonder if that is to heavy for my tractor. The 3 pt hitch lifting capacity is 1985lbs but says the max weight for a rotory cutter for example is 770lbs. The max for any implement it list is 926lbs for the backhoe but says a subframe is necessary. The loader capacity is 1000lbs. My thought was that 1000 lbs between the lift arms wouldn't be any more strain on them than 770lbs hanging 6ft behind them. Would 1000lbs be to much or be about right?

You will be fine. I have 12 100lbs tractor weights on a homemade 3pt bar that I use on the rear of my L3700SU when loading dirt it the backhoe is not on. This will also reduce wear on the front axle since you are adding counter weight behind the rear axle. Water in the tires is just that, it will help hold the rear tires on the ground but will not offer any counter weight.

If using concrete, it weights 150# per cubic foot so you will need between 6 & 7 cu ft.

Low and wide is my suggestion, not tall. You dont want it unstable when sitting not on the tractor.

I figured if I put approx 400lbs of scrap steel in it then I can only fill barrel 2/3 full of cement and have 1000#. That keeps the weight low and I'll have 12 inches in the top of the barrel to carry chains, tools etc.

Remember to allow for water to drain easily. It'd be a shame to have tools and chains in there sitting in a couple inches of water.

I would embed the scrap steel in the concrete and then if the bottom of the barrel rusts out the steel will still be there.

I would fill the rears with fluid just for the added traction, the weight will be a bonus. Then a 500# or so counter weight should be enough.

Wondered the same for my 3301. Moving bales gets a little nerve racking. Added WW Fluid to the rears. Was told its 200# per side. Made a difference but still need more, Anyone ever price a Kubota ballast box? afraid to ask
