I have a customer who has purchased a used Whiteman ride on power trowel powered by a V1505-E Kubota that is experiencing problems and I thought I would see if anyone here had any suggestions. The machine will lose power under load and blow black smoke as it bogs down. Starts fine and runs fine with no miss when there is no load on it. New air filter, new fuel filters, new injector nozzles, and stanadyne performance treatment. After the new injector nozzles the machine operated properly for two hours and then had the same symptoms again. I my self did not perform any of the repairs so I can not address procedures for anything that has been done so far, but I will probably be working on it now. Thinking about running the thing without the muffler check that but it has to be running on fresh concrete to duplicate the problem, which kinda of makes it hard to test out different theories.

Check the valves, do a compression check, check the fuel system for any blockages, check the air cleaner and system, and lastly, pull the injection pump and send it to be tested and possibly rebuilt.

Cold intake and exhaust valve clearance should be .0071"/.0087"(0.18/0.22mm)

So still searching for answers on this machine. I checked the valves and adjusted a few with none of them more than .001 off and they were on the tight side. Pulled injectors and pump and sent them off to get checked and fixed if needed. They just got back with no issues noted other than normal wear in the ip, which they went through and calibrated. I haven't got the thing back together yet, but it would seem as though none of the fuel components are the problem. I have had the intake hose off and no restrictions. Going to check compression tomorrow, but this rig has less than 400 hours on it so I doubt that compression will be low. Maybe a governor problem? Anyone been into one of these? Any other ideas?

As Wolfman said, fuel blockage of some sort?

It runs fine until under load, and heavier draw for fuel...

Just not sure it'd be smoking black bad if running lean.

Exactly my thinking, if it was starving for fuel there wouldn't be any black smoke. I am wondering if the governor isn't working properly and when under heavy load the fuel is loading up in the cylinders.

Does it throttle up and down smooth? Funky governor can alter RPM changes/range. I honestly know nothing about governors in these engines.

Tougher to test as you mentioned is the exhaust side. Restriction would cause it to run rich, lose power, and smoke. Mouse nest, etc come to mind.

Just tossing ideas.....

Of course, bad cylinder could do it.

It runs like a sewing machine other than under heavy load. Crisp throttle response and no erratic rpm's that you would associate with governor. We will see what the compression test results are and rule that out next.

rjc1985, have you checked the rocker travel? The symptom makes me think an exhaust valve isn't opening far enough. (I realize the tell-tale signs are backfiring and lifter clatter, but...)

Has the motor been checked running on a known fuel source?

Just a dumb thought, but have you checked the air filter, or for restricted air intake issue? Not familiar with that unit, is it turbo charged? Could have a boost prs. leak if turbo charged.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem does anyone know if rjc1985 found a solution? I've been trying to figure this out for 18months - multiple mechanics/Desiel specialists lots of $$$. To much spent now to give up.:(
Thanks in advance.

Have you done a compression test?
Have you done a fuel injector pop off test?
Have you adjusted the valves?
Have you feed the Injection Pump directly with fuel?
