My RTV 900 (700 hrs) has started to do some clattering, in the owners manual it notes that the over head valves should be adjusted at 500 hrs, could this be what is clattering? any one have an idea how to adjust the valves?

It's doubtful you could hear the valves clattering. nevertheless, they should be adjusted at 500 hr's. I've seldom seen them far out of adjustment though! The proper clearance is .008" cold.
A CD version of the service manual is available from your Kubota dealer for about $20.00 (printed version is $80.00)

Thanks Ed, I adjusted the valves... you are correct it wasn't the valves making the noise. Now I think that it is the front drive shaft, where the U Joint connects to the front differential. There seems to be quite a bit of play. I greased it, no real change. Any Ideas?

That drive shaft on older (pre 2008) RTV's often does make a terrific rattle! Fortunately there is a permanent fix for it though it isn't real cheap. Kubota have a kit to replace the complete drive shft with the new one piece one like they have on the RTV1000 and the new RTV900. I seriously recommend it! Should cost about $550.00 plus labor to get it installed. Likely about 2 hr's labor at most shops. You can easily do it yourself but it does involve a little cutting on the bottom of the machine for clearance. good instructions and a template are included in the kit.

I would recommend the change of U Joints and other things that might have been over looked @ 500 hrs. on the machine. Remember always PM the equipment.

Replace those three joints, plus the steady bearing AND replace the rear yoke to the clamp style, will cost you almost as much as the new type shaft and it will STILL vibrate! Seriously, if you plan on keeping the unit just put the new shaft in! BTW, also check the ujoints in the rear half-shafts. They should be about ready to fail at 700 hr's! If you catch them before they fail you can save the yokes AND about $400.00 :)

The new kit is way better. Make sure you have your serial number when you get it, there are 2 different kits, one shaft is just a couple millimeters different in length. Havent heard anyone complain about the new kit yet. Starting in 2009 they all come with the shaft already updated. Also, check the inner rear u joints in the drive axles on both sides, they commonly wear out after several hundred hours. If you let them go too long they will damage the yokes.

I'm curious to know what the current status of this kit is. Are people who have upgraded, happy with the no rattling? I've searched the internet, and can't find the part # for these kits. Can anyone help. Thanks.

I did reply to your private post but it must have escaped into the either!!
The part numbers are K7561-91602 up to serial number 59002 after that serial use K7571-91602. This is the fix! no more rattles with this shaft! The installation instructions come with it.
