Beats cutting it with a scythe and picking it up with a pitchfork though! How do you suppose they store it? Old fashioned hay mow? Bale it up on level ground out of that wagon?

I wouldn't think round bales would be popular on that terrain!:eek:

Getting the hay into the barn Re: Putting up hay on a hill side

Hi,

They have electric motor driven blowers who blow the hay through tubes into the barn, on top of the barn roof inside there might be a telescopic distributor tube system who lets the hay out again and distributes it to the sides too, some have dryer sytems, blowing cold or hot air from the floor of the barn through the hay stock.
Switzerland is strongly subsidizing these hill farms to keep the landscape as it used t be.
Some cheesemakers dont allow silage to be fed to cows to prevent the smell in the cheese e.g. emmental

It is nice to watch, but accidents happen too.

Enjoy the videos from our neighbours.

Regards

Thanks for answering my question! Their methods of harvesting grass make good use of land that couldn't be used for any other food raising method I know of. Really ingenious!

I get a little prickly at the folks that think if we all gave up eating meat that there would be so much more food for the world. That's only true if we humans developed rumens so we could survive on grass. Sheep (vested interest here) and goats can make use of grass, other browsable stuff, from land that is useless for raising anything else, eg arid semi desert, and mountains.

And if the hill is too steep, cut off 2 legs of lamb, and let them grow up on the hill...:D

I thought hill sheep just developed with two legs shorter, rignt handed sheep that spiral up the mountain one way, and left handed sheep that spiral up the other way? no need to cut....:D:eek:

Did my version of hillside hay today, with the AC D-12 and C&C drum mower. Nowhere as dangerous as the guy sitting on the tedder, but the one hill gets a little dicey, when you hits a ground hog hole then hill. :DButt grabs the seat so hard, it leaves a mark...

Now I am wondering how they bail the hay or do they just fill the barn loose like that????
