We were just talking about one of them for the SSQA on my loader for setting trusses, great job!
Nice use of rail tie clips.
Clippy, It's a 3 point boom pole.

Although I can't envision all the functions, I'd copy it if I had the material. And I likely will, when a boom pole percolates higher on my list.
But... haven't you heard that scientists have determined that the Loc Ness monster couldn't have lived in the lake, given the lack of forage and type of water? I think your next steps will need to be to build a submarine around it so you can go after the giant squid that attacked the Nautilus.
To me, that's equivalent to saying, "I think I put too much whiskey over my ice."

Useful tool !! What say you beef up that gusset ??? That is the only weakness in the picture! - Hate to see what weights you gonna need on the front end when you go about picking up something......heavY

I have wanted a boom pole for quite a while so while I was watching the paint dry I figured I would start on it.

That is part of the work in progress. Haven't decided if I am going to gusset the pole or use two pieces of angle iron from the base to the pole forming a triangle. Either way, it does need additional bracing.

I thought that was a flexible design counter weight. Just hook more on the far end as you hall more in the bucket.

If you can move the corner brace out further it will add greatly to the strength.A work in progress. Still a few things to do.

That looks like belt line rail, and track clips,, hmmm you don't work around a mine some place do you?? It looks like she should take just about any thing your little beasty can lift,, good deal

If you add the 4" for top link attachment tabs = 59"
Pole = 3/16" X 2.5" X 2.5" X 51" re-purposed torsion axle tube.
Upright = 3/16" X 2.5" X 2.5" X 27" re-purposed torsion axle tube.
Lower brace from upright to boom brace = 1/4" X 4" X 4" X 25" angle iron.
Hooks = re-purposed rail clips.
Base = re-purposed 1979 Fisher Plow Conventional Pushbeam.
Bracing from Pushbeam to upright = 1/2" plate.
Hooks = rep-purposed rail clips.
2 large thick washers to reinforce pushbeam where holes were drilled for the draw pins.
1+ lb of welding wire.
The top is 51" + 4" for front hook = 55"
If you add the 4" for top link attachment tabs = 59"

We used to call that kind of over engineering: "Hell for looks, but it sure is strong." That is not a comment on the looks as it looks great for what it is intended.

I would only add one piece, but you may not need it, it would be a strap that wraps from the upright beam to the top beam, as all the force in on that corner and with an open box beam it can just tear the bottom of the box off.

Is this where you are talking about? I ground the upright and recessed the top beam into it. I can easily add a strap if you think it should have one.Excellent build.

Can anyone please explain any uses of this implement that would be preferable over a FEL or BH?
This post just schooled me on the existence of said implement, now i am just trying to understand it.
I can certainly see its usefulness for lifting stuff, but does it really only make sense to own one if you DONT have a FEL or BH?

hurleyhuckster, if you don't have a FEL or BH you can attach the boom pole to the 3pt arm on your tractor (with a top link) and lift things much easier then bending you knees and grunting!!!!!
