Several weeks ago at the morning meeting of the He-man, Female Woman Haters club, over coffee the comment was made that someone had read/heard/saw/ something that could/would take the dye out of the off road fuel. Now I really have my doubts about this, but rather than tell him, he was full of it, I thought I would toss this question out and see what somebody else thinks.....

Actually, some reprocessing processes can do it, but it depends if the molecules in the dye are larger or smaller than the ones that make up the fuel as to whether or not a filter can do it.

You might be able to centrifuge it out but all in all, it's not worth the cost of doing it IMHO.

thats a good question - I bet not Skeets - that is like asking if you could take the yellow out of cheese. I bet if you could - it would cost more than to buy the stuff without it !:D:)

Fractional distillation will do it:cool: assuming you don't blow yourself up:eek: in the process.

If there is a difference in molecular size, an RO will also accomplish the task.

I was reading a thread somewhere just a few nights ago about this subject. It seems that if you place the fuel in a clear container in the sunlight that the red dye turns brown after a day or two.

Short of that, apply from the state for a tax exempt card to purchase and use off road red dyed fuel for farm or agricultural use. Most states have some sort of exemption for even small truck patches.

We can get off road no problem here, unless you are not the sharpest knife in the drawer, and get stupid,, Like the young man that has a Dodge diesel pick up, and it is ALLLLLL built up, propane kit, all kinds of go fast stuff,, and got caught running off road out of Dads fuel tank, because he didn't have money for fuel on a Friday night.. I don't know what it cost him but I haven't seen the truck around for some time!

I added some additive to my trucks diesel tank last summer and wanted to wash out the funnel and wash it down the fill tube so went to the garage and grabbed the off road can and was just about to pour it in when I remembered it was red for a reason.
I can see how some one could make that mistake real easy and I would have not even thought about it if it wasn't for reading all the post on here about off road fuel.

Dyed fuel (gas) will even change the color of the engine oil.
A few get smacked for using it around here, myself i have never been checked.
One farmer fills tank with regular gas, but it is marked with a dye used for theft detection. Had a rash of fuel thefts, he was hit 4 times by same guy.

He needs to switch the gas and diesel labels on his tanks until the problem goes away (or stalls). :)
