Well, unless some (pay attention this time) "mysterious foreign object" were to temporarily disable it from proper *safe* operation. It would be terribly unfortunate if such a thing were found shortly after money was spend on a new unit, but that's how things go sometimes.

And usually that IS how it goes working against me, might as well make use of the too frequent scenario for benefit.

That usually costs me more with my wife ;) that honey do list usually triples

But you guys have been at this long enough to know that the demands will come anyway. Might as well get something out of it, and something to make meeting those demands easier in the process...

Skeets, that's definitely so true. I get a free pass on wood working stuff though. Especially if it has to do with new flooring or a kitchen. same thing with slowly swapping out the 30 year old appliances.
I gotta get this box blade finished though. I have a side job for it in a couple weeks. Should almost cover the cost of building it :D

Brother had told me about the issue with the welder. He was actually confused. It was dads mig that was stuck on high. The old arc welder is still working fine. No new Lincoln in the near future

DT, I'm truly sad you won't be getting a nice Lincoln welder. But since I was shocked that you would have found one you really liked at Lowes, I'm sorta glad you're not making that purchase.

It was actually a good ol fashioned 220 volt stick welder that I was looking at. Course now that you mention it, lowes and Home Depot usually get cheaper stripped down models to keep the cost down. Probably wouldn't get 50 or 60 years out of it like my dad did with his.
I gotta talk to my father in law. He's got one that's been sitting at his house taking up space. Could probably pick it up cheap :D

Got the brackets removed, straightened, and the welds cleaned up tonight.

Got them tacked back on but was having some issues with the welder. So I decided to call it a night. When I was rolling up the welding leads I found the issue when the ground clamp fell off  I'll fix the ground clamp tomorrow at some point and try again :D

Whew! When I clicked on the link, my heart was in my feet (it's a HUGE challenge to me to avoid pangs of jealousy when I am confronted with someone's beautiful welds!), and seeing that camera shudder hid those welds let me admire the job without having to deal with the envy monster! <blush>

Honestly my welds ain't pretty  so I've been choosing camera angles that don't highlight them. now if my dad wasn't on oxygen at the moment and on serious restrictions from the doc,. I would have had him go over the welds  then I wouldn't have any problems showing them off :D

Good luck with that! If you do have to buy one, I learned a free lesson a month or so back: the newer welders use aluminum in the winding; you need to find an older welder. I found a couple on CraigsList that were so old that I got them for just a little less than their new price had been.

Good advise, I hadn't thought of that with the new ones. My father in law has an older one he doesn't use. I'll have to see what his plans are for it :)

Got the rippers welded back on and definitely put some heat to it this time. Brother was right, you gotta haul butt with it or it will blow through the metal. Thinking the regulator inside isn't regulating any more.

Don't think I did to bad considering it's over 50 years old.

I'll hook it behind the l2250 tomorrow and give it a good test.

Here's what I was working with.

And here's what the ground cable was like

Dad definitely need to invest in some new cables and rod holder. I'm thinking they are original to the machine :)

Well gave it another test today. Three out of the four rippers held good. Didn't get really good penetration on one of the welds. It held for about three passes and the found a root and the tractor stopped. Kicked it into 4wd and proceeded to rip it off  bent the pin into a horse shoe, and ripped the metal on the other bracket. Back to the drawing board. Gonna make up another bracket. Pick up some better rods, and a new rod holder for the welder.

You have an engineering mistake there...

Your cross brace is acting like a fulcrum against your welds. You literally only have the strength of the weld from the bottom of the angle iron brace to the hole point as your primary strength. Everything else will fail on a factor of the distance from the hole upward.

You'd be better off punching the cross brace with some rectangular tube that will fit your ripper tangs, then welding the tube at the top and bottom of the cross brace (leaving enough for a hole for your pins to go in), letting the tangs of the rippers slide up and down in the rectangular tube. Your cross brace can now put it's full dimension against the torque forces and your pin only has to deal with up and down pressures, not front to back forces as well as up and down. This is what you see on most modern ripper designs.

PS- reuse the angle iron holes in front to support a sprayer rail to keep the dust down!

I had come to a similar conclusion  I had originally planned on doing that, but then ran into an issue with the local fab shop getting the material. They had gotten ripped off so they were charging by the stick instead of by what you needed out of there left overs. So I dug through what they had for scrap. Lesson learned. Should have gone to little rock and bought directly from there supplier and got what I needed  will see what the local metal place has available tomorrow when I run into town. Might be able to get it done Friday if the parts are available tomorrow for dads jeep.

Would it be possible/practical/easy/worth it to add a stout cross member in front of the upper ends of the ripper teeth? That would keep the upper ends from being driven forward, relieving some of the load on the current mounts. Maybe.

I'll have to see what I can come up with. I stopped by the metal place up here earlier to pick up some better welding rods,. And there prices are fairly reasonable compared to the fab shop in conway. It would almost be faster just to torch out the main beam and sleeve a new one. Wouldn't take more the ten minutes to cut the slots for the sleeves with a torch. Probably another ten minutes to torch the welds and whack with a sledge to remove the old cross beam. I could have them cut the sleeves at 6". So all I would have to do is run them through the drill press, and weld them in.

You not gaining anything cutting off what you already have. Super strong fix- weld another cross brace a couple inches below first one- against rippers. Then bar takes all abuse. Calculate your leverage from ground to pinhole.splitting difference will double the strength.just a heavy bar for rippers to back against.
