Sorry, if you can afford the space run, best is over and behind the seated position. This is rare but I ran on a unit like that once and loved it, no exhaust at all. Only would work on a cab or other covered run.

If you can't do that, then up with a self closing rain cap. Forward and down is how my L3200 has it and I get way more exhaust in my face with that setup than my D-17 does with its vertical rain cap setup. Also more classic...

My B5100 is forward and although it does blow onto the back of the snow blower body and cause the snow to get wet and then freeze into solid ice, I still prefer it to the upright.
I have an old Massey 30 tractor which has an upright exhaust stack, but this winter I got 2 elbows and laid it down onto the cowling - now has better visibility and clearance.

The poll is almost even.
There are good arguments on both sides, but after weighting the pros and cons I decided to raise the muffler to an upright position! ;)
The next step will be to make the extension pipe easy to remove as I have a low door to the tractor shed!

The exhaust stack on my D-17 only has a pressure fit for the upright stack. I have to take it off to take the hood tins off the unit... which is often!

You can see my brother's dirty fingerprints on my nice new repaint job on the stack in this picture...

It just lifts off and I don't get any leakage because the muffler is a straight through type off of a Toyota pickup! It actually works great. You can barely be near this beast when the motor is running with the stack off. With it on, you can talk normally beside it and be heard.

Oh yeah... don't forget the rain cap. Bent stacks are nice for putting the exhaust 'away' from the unit, but actually don't stop as much rain entry as they should. So if you think it might get left out in the rain, a rain cap works well. The one you see here has kept decades of rain out of the unit as it's never been inside. I only had 1 rusted bolt on the exhaust stack hold down to the manifold. Very little rust inside the manifold. Get a good quality cap or get in practice with tossing a bucket over the stack top when left outside!

Mine came pointing forward. After 20 years I thought I would move it upright. Well everything pretty much stuck in place after I loosened the bolts. Used a pry bar, slipped, barely missed my eye, went to emergency, got 7 stitches, got home and thought: hmmmmmm, forward is ok.

You silly old man! I teach you everything I know and you *still* don't know nuthin'! If it's pointing forward and they can hear the warning shot, it ain't on properly.

But more important, why are you wasting ammo? Don't! President Osama is directing BATF to start banning legal ammo:
Associated Press: US considers banning type of popular rifle ammunition

But, but, but... isn't it warning enough when they hear you cock the weapon? In my view, that's overly kind, and I make it my firm policy to always do that. If I think of it.
