Daren when we had the green houses open, that's all we used was raised beds. I found out a long time ago that with the raised beds, you can tailor each one for what ever your planting. And they are a lot easier to work with in MHO that in a ground bed garden, at least for a small growing space. You would not believe how many people have adopted the raised beds and yeah its a PIA to fill them at least you can mow around them and do what needs to be done

We had made a go of it the first three years in this house. Raised beds and all. Problem was the droughts in the summer. And some hellacious wet springs. Would miss planting the lettuce and spinach cause it was so wet to till. Then it would come up and go straight to seed  Water bill would creep up to almost 200$ a month to keep stuff going. Then anything that's normally full Sun, has to have shade or it burns to a crisp. Then outside projects that were supposed to be a team effort end up being me  I got bloody tired of trying to keep up with it all!!!! We did have some of the best melons you ever had though :D super sweet, and juicy :D

Seems spring has come and gone down here. Last week broke records with 90 F temps. Planned on planting seeds for squash, cukes, and okra this past weekend, but that didn't happen because of 4" + rain on Saturday. Taters are 12" or so, but nearly got washed away with the heavy rains. Looks like rain for at least the next 5 days..... :(

I think my taters are going to rot up here, though the sweet taters are lookin real good about time to pluck them off and pot them, and hope the deer don't find them again this year

Skeets what kind of taters do you grow? I planted the red ones as well as the Yukon Gold, which I've never tried before. The tops are more spindly than my reds. My biggest garden challenge is deer. Had a 50 ft row of the prettiest green bean bushes you ever saw. Came out one morning and it looked like a mower had come through. They ate cucumber and squash plants too...unusual since the leaves are sticky. They're basically goats in a different body!

I put in Yukon gold's last year I tried them in cages, and the turn out was not as great as but better then I hoped for. So same this year 10 pounds of seed taters in mulch, though I moved the cages more into the sun so maybe they will dry a bit right now the mulch is soaked and its raining again but we shall see

It's still too cold to plant taters here, and last year's have sprouted, not sure if they will still do for seed by the time it warms up. I grew some purple ones last year they were real tasty. Love yukons too.

We did taters in tires :D Some baby reds, and some russets when we had the garden. As the taters sprout up. You add a tire and fill it with dirt. When they are ready to be dug. Just pull the tires and roll the pile :D works good if you dont have a lot of space.

Yep the cages is the same idea,, I made some up from a roll of fence welded 4x4 about 4 feet across and 4 feet high. Laid land scape cloth on the bottom to keep out critters and then lined the side with it as well as the tops grew I added more mulch hay till it the cages were full, then unhook the sides and everything falls out. I have seen people using garbage cans with lots of holes drilled in them tires 55 gal drums large boxes. I saw one guy that had a large plastic culvert pipe 48 inch I think, cut it in half and grew taters in that

Over the last week, spread 23 loads of mulch, me loading with the Kubota and my good neighbor pulling his big spreader with a 53 Oliver, sheared the sheep, another group operation, and hauled three ram lambs off for new careers in the freezer. (Yippee, they were a little too pushy to keep around). Best part of the road trip up to Saranac meat packer was on one of the windy, hilly back roads I saw an elderly (90ish) couple loading sticks from their lawn into the bucket of the cutest little Kubota in the spring sunshine...:)

Ice came of last night! Waiting for the trees we spaded in last year to Greg and the grass seed we dormant seeded last fall to become green?

I have been a paving guy all my life and never made anything green before, hope it works !

Finally some nice warm weather here :D. Ground is starting to do out, snow is almost gone where the sun doesn't shine. I think by next weekend I'll be able to try out the hog in the valley. It will be another month before the mud dries up on the mountain before we can start clearing up there.

I'm hoping the brutal winter didn't kill any of my raspberry plants. I prune them all in the beginning of winter to help prevent it, but sometimes it will get to them anyways...the blueberries, blackberries, and black raspberries seem to never be bothered by harsh winters.

Got the wifes hanging baskets up. Half the flower beds mulched. Flowering trees were mulched as well. Went over to the neighbors with a wheel barrow and shovel and did some strategic thinning of some perennials in there flower beds and replanted in our flower bed:) Tackled the garage yesterday and got it to where you can move and see the floor. Some junk that was being stored for the kids just up and disapeared  Hauled two loads of junk to the dump. good news is I got my garage back :D Cleaned out the tool box that was on my old f150, and installed it on the gmc. wife bought a freezer at a yard sale yesterday so I was able to get her to deal with the screw it shelf in the laundry room as well :D repurposed the shelf to the garage for oil, and chemical storage. Climbed up on the roof with the leaf blower, and got rid of the clingons (seed pods) from the pin oaks, and cleaned the gutters. Then cleaned the patios and the driveway. Then moved the palm tree and banana tree outside. Will be glad to go to work tomorrow to get a break
