My manual recommends stopping movement before shifting F-R or R-F. I just use the brakes and only rarely do I use the clutch.

You have to come to a complete stop and use the clutch. It's not a shuttle shift, but just a forward/reverse.

So is it just the hydraulic shuttle shift that you can change on the fly?
I can do it with mine, but I have a GST and they work differently than a DT.

I'm not familiar with the L3800, but we have synchronized shuttle, non synchronized shuttle and hydraulic shuttle.

non synchronized shuttle: stop movement before reverse/forward, need to use foot clutch.

synchronized shuttle: no need to stop movement before reverse/forward, just do it at relatively slow speed, need to use foot clutch.

hydraulic shuttle: no need to stop movement before reverse/forward, just do it at relatively slow speed and no need to use foot clutch.

The L3800DT has a non synchronized trans. Have to stop and clutch it. Old school gear trans with a separate leaver for forward/reverse.

Our old 3750DT has a Hydraulic Shuttle, no need to stop or clutch it.

The only basic L with a synchronized shuttle is the L4600DT, but still have to clutch it I believe.

Thanks TripleR, and Bluegill for the clarity and explanation.

GST's do work rather odd, they have a mechanical synchronized shuttle, but are run by a hydraulic clutch.

I guess I am still confused on the shuttle shift. I am told that it is supposed to save time when using a loader since you only have to shift the lever forward and reverse? So what I am hearing is that you have to clutch each time? What about the main shifter is it in neutral and your just using the shuttle shifter to go forward and reverse?
Anyways I called Kubota service and asked them...they have to call me back....really? The tech looked it up in the manual, but it is not really clear....that's what I thought too.

You don't do anything to the main gear shift, it will be in the same gear going forward or backward.

TripleR has it right.

Don't you have an owner's manual?

The lever you are calling "shuttle shift" on the left side of the seat, is just the shifting leaver for Forward Reverse & High Low range. You have to clutch it to change gears.

On my dads L2250 he has the non synchronized shuttle shift. It has two levers, one on each side of the steering column. Left lever is forward/reverse. Right lever is gears 1-4 and shifts in a side ways H pattern. Hi/low range lever is to the left of the seat. You can get reverse in all speeds except 4 hi. And have to use the clutch for direction and gears

I don't think so on Kubota models, the HI/LO range lever on our M8540 is to the right of the seat in front of the gear shift lever.

The shuttle shift at the left of the seat typically has to be clutched. The shifter by the steering wheel that can go from forward to reverse on the fly is often called a power reserved or hydraulic shuttle shifter.

I own a 2013 Kubota L3800DT..It is a gear drive tractor. It does not have shuttle shift!!! You need to clutch the tractor to change gears or go in reverse.. The lever beside the tractor seat ( the reverse,high,low) where is saves time by not moving the main shifter on the tranny itself..so if your main tranny shifter is in 3rd gear..using the lever by your seat..your in 3rd gear reverse, third gear low or third gear high..Keep in mind you still need to use the clutch to go in reverse ,high or low gear..If the main shifter is in neutral..The whole tractor is in neutral
