The tractor is up on jack stands for now. I think the oil pan can be removed without taking the front loader and sub frame off. My service manual is not here yet and I don't know if there are hidden pan bolts at the front of the engine.

Even if I did remove the front loader it wouldn't help getting at the front pan bolts as they are hidden by a steel plate surrounding the engine.

I hope the engine does NOT need to be removed to get the oil pan off or is that why the front loader needs to be removed so the front sub frame can be removed as well?

Oh I need my service manual.............................

I think you will need to remove the loader & sub frame. Then unbolt the frame that surrounds the engine. Then you can roll it forward with the front axle still attached. You that will give you access to the complete engine without splitting the tractor.

OK, I will start removing the loader and subframe. It may take me awhile as I'm doing this by myself. I picked up the parts I ordered from the dealer and will make a list of everything I need after I am done taking this beast apart.

Had a friend from work stop by today who is very knowledgeable on these diesel engines. He has rebuilt a few D600's and really knows what he's doing way more than I do.

After an hour long discussion about what needed to be done we decided that it would be best to pull the engine out and tear it down completely.

The cylinder head is OK and will be dropped off at the machine shop later on when the engine is out and stripped.

I won't have much time this weekend to do much on it but I will post my daily progress throughout this adventure.

All I got done this evening was the removal of the front loader hydraulic pump.

Good morning Grumpy 560. I was looking at the pics that you've posted of your latest project, sweet little tractor that is in great shape, aside from the obvious mechanical issue. I noticed that you had taken the front loader hydraulic pump off to make the repair easier. Is there any possibility when you are taking a breather and having a cold brew could you get the part # off the pump? I believe it starts with a B. I can't seem to find a lick of info on this thing and because I'm not willing to purchase a new a new my local dealer isn't exactly excited about helping me. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thx and God Bless.

I was able to get a few things done today. I removed the starter, battery, fuel tank, battery tray and tool box unit with the wire harness. Front bucket is off and the loader frame with hydraulics is unbolted and just sitting in place as I can't lift the entire unit off by myself. Will get some help removing the loader this week sometime.

When I removed the starter it was full of oil and so was the bell housing. I'm thinking that the rear main seal is shot so its a good thing that we decided to pull the engine out instead of doing an in frame repair.

A new clutch kit and bearing will go back in regardless as it was not disengaging right anyway and the bearing was very noisy. I'll have plenty of time in the evening to work on the tractor during the week. I'm hoping to have the engine out and sitting on the work bench soon.

Front end loader and sub frame are off. I have some cleaning up to do on the rest of the tractor before I split it apart.

I would really like to move it outside, cover a few things up and pressure wash what's left. Would it be OK to do this ?

Cool, then its going to get cleaned up. I might as well take the seat and rear fenders off before I pressure wash it, maybe give it a new coat of paint before reassembly.

Most of my decals are faded or gone anyway so a good coat of paint isn't going to hurt anything.

That is pretty well torn down for a "Slight mechanical issue"... LOL!

Might as well do a partial restore at this point. Repaint, clean and resurrect about anything wrong with it. You'll be happy with the nearly new tractor you get out of it at the end but it's still a lot of work to go!

Keep the posts coming on the progress! :D

I have a D-17 I have to do something similar with so I'm paying attention to thread!

Make sure before you put everything back together that you check the pilot bushing/ bearing in the end of the crankshaft. Sone use a bushing, some use a roller bearing. I am not sure of when the change was made. If it a bushing it probably needs to be replaced. If it is a bearing it could be ok but I would replace it anyway.

Thanks everyone for the replies and help.

Things have been slow as I had to wait to get my engine hoist back but its here now. I removed the rear fenders, foot steps and the steering linkage. I pressure washed everything today. The tractor came out cleaner than what I thought it would and now its time to split the unit apart.

I only have 2 items left that I'm not too sure what to do with yet. One is the front drive shaft and the other is the hydraulic pump and lines going to the rear. After those are out of the way I will be ready to pull it apart.

I was thinking about leaving the lines on the pump and just unbolt the pump from the engine? Drive shaft should fall out when the front end is moved forward. Anyway that's about where I'm at with it right now.

OK, so the lines have to come off. I found the filter was 95% clogged when I removed the bolt out of the lower hydraulic line on the trans. Once this is out of the way I am going to try and pull it apart.

Got it apart finally. I'll have to clean everything up again as the bell housing was full of oil and water. I can't tell for sure but it does not look like there is a bushing or bearing in the end of the crank.

I am going to replace everything clutch related while its apart as I don't want to go through this again.
