I am putting a new pilot bushing and drive shaft in my tractor. There is a seal that installs after the dry bushing is in place. Since it is sealed, it seems like I should put some grease in there. Has anyone tried grease ? Thanks, Dan

I have a B7100 but hope vic or someone else jumps in to verify if I am right or not. :cool:If you will look real close in front of the clutch peddle (in front and low) there is a small hole and appx. 6 inches inside that hole on mine is a greese fitting for that bearing. I would put a recomended greese in it prior and aft. If yu havent taken it out yet you might want to try greese in that nipple might solve your problem;). Like I said hope someone else jumps in. handy

Hi Olebmw. Well I can tell you this. I put grease into the pilot bushing on my B7200 when I changed the clutch. When I pushed the propeller shaft into it the seal popped out. Sooo Just a little bit of grease on the end of the shaft to make it slide in easier. And the pilot bushing is made of some stuff that has lubricant in it. Some one with more tech knowhow can explain that.:D Dusty

If you are talking about the same location dusty just described then I would reccomend not putting any grease in there during the build up. (Not counting using the grease trick to get the old seal/bushing out)

I think extra grease during build up could migrate into the clutch works and cause slippage.

Handy, that is absolutely not true! I value all of your input and besides sometimes it can be slightly misleading what exactly the intentions are of everybody making a thread.

You are a great man with great advice. All of us truely appreciate ALL of your valuable input.

Hi Dusty, If I have it right I think you may be referring to oil impregnated sintered bronze called "Oilite" bushing and are self lubricating .They are used a lot when there is not much space to fit a ball or roller Bearring or plces hidden away so not easy to lube regularly.

Thanks for the replys. I'm still not clear if the seal is there to keep a small amount of grease in or dirt out. Maybe both. The new bushing, listed as a dry bushing, had a plastic or nylon liner in it. Hope I'm not replacing it again after a few hours.

Its to keep the dust out. You put a dab of grease on the end of shaft so that it slides past the seal and into the bushing easily. Plastic liner ? No clue.:D Dusty

With all this talk of plastic liner I am begining to think we are not refering to what I thought we were.If we are then then the plastic liner may be used as a "keep" to stop the impregnated oil dripping out and has to be removed before sliding in the the shaft:confused::confused:
