sorry if this has been gone over before but oil and air are to short for seaching. any-who i cant seem to find a replacement filter at all for this thing so is this thing a permanent filter that you just keep cleaning forever? also since all i can read of whats left to the label on it is gasoline on one line and kerosene on another line. what do i use to clean it? how do i clean it? and what oil and how much oil do i put back in? i have a manual for the tractor and it just says to fill to mark every 50hrs.

Usually if it's just a small film of dirt in the bottom of the bowl i'll just wipe it out with a rag and refill to the line with oil. If it's really bad i'll let it soak in the parts washer for awhile. Which the one i have at work uses a detergent based solvent. If i'm in the field i've sprayed them down with brake cleaner and blew it out with an air chuck in a pinch. Just make sure to protect your eyes if you blow it out with an air chuck and it's dry if using brake cleaner.
I wouldn't use gas since the vapors are flammable, cleaning with diesel or kerosene would be a safer bet, and would give the same results as the parts washer. :)

My opinion is to keep that oil bath in good shape, i dont think you can get a better air filter.
Washing out with solvent/ kerosene as mentioned is the best.
Its incredible the amount of dirt they trap.

AN oil bath filter is a fickle beeauch , too thin of an oil and it gets sucked up the tube, and too thick it is hard to "breathe" through....in old days straight 30 weight. YOU are not looking to lubricate anything, just provide a sticky surface for dirty stuff to stick too.....get a quart of the cheapest stuff you can find, fill to the line and change it every 50 hours or so.

if it used to be straight 30 in the old days then likely that is what mine will take, the recommended lubrication types listed on the side of the tractor are as such...

engine - #30 engine oil
hydraulics - #140 turbine oil
mission case - #90 gear oil

the manual only list one other lubricant and that is chassie grease.

Most of the oil bath filters used the same oil as the engine used. They didn't have a lot of choices, but even so they kept it simple. Most also recommended cleaning the filter "daily" in dusty conditions. Be sure to only add oil to the line where the mesh is as indicated.

If you want to wash the filter element to almost new condition try finding an auto or other type industrial machine shop in your area that has an enclosed heated high-pressure turntable- or revolving-type wash cabinet.

Some small risk that if the element is just rusted badly (dry unused) and 50-yrs old it might be torn up by the washing.

Mine on old Ferguson (after dismantling the rivets of the canister) came out sparking clean. Went in looking like road tar.

Please post back your experiences so we may all learn.

well just cleaned it today, she was beyond dirty. had sludge i had to scoop out of the bottom. used a whole can of break cleaner, just kept spraying till it came back out clear-ish. put it back together and put non-det sae30 in it, figure that would be the best dirt catching oil and also most likely exactly what they designed the filter with. but after putting it all back together my ol girl is a smoker and a half.... started a new thread for that.
