Hey guys new to the forum. I just bought an old L245F just as an old beater tractor to run a 4 ft bush hog and a 5ft finish mower. I have a L2500DT but got tired of taking the backhoe off every time I wanted to use another implement. Anyway the L245 seemed to be in fair mechanical condition. No leaks anywhere. Tach does not work but I know why. My question is when I tried to use the 5ft finish mower with it would barely run it. It will run it but very SLOW. Is there something wrong with this tractor or is that just all the power this thing has? It seems to run fine, no smoke or anything running just does not have near the power compared to my L2500. The L245 should just be a few HP shy from the L2500 but man there is sure a BIG difference.

That machine is running 22 hp at the pto. From what i gathered it has a two speed pto, 540/1000.
I wouldnt expect it to be a powerhouse on the brush mower, but should turn it.
I would make sure its on the correct pto speed setting, a540 pto mower isnt intended to run at 1000 and vise versa.

Im running a prehistoric 60" finish mower behind my L1501 and it seems to work fine.

You should be able to run a 5' finish mower behind that very easily. Something is lowing your available Horse power. Lack of fuel, air or compression will lower your power.

Well don't I feel like a dummy! Thanks guys. That is probably it. Tractordata.com says it is actually a 3 speed PTO. 540/700/1000. I just had the PTO stick in the up position closest to the front of the tractor. I guess that is the 1000 position. I'll play with it tonight. Never occured to me it had more than 1 speed. Kind of new to the tractor world. Thanks again!

I have a L185 (smaller version) very similar to the L245 as I understand it.

There should be three PTO positions as you noted.

1 = 540 (from memory this is toward the front and to the left position)
2 = 700
3 = 1000

You are correct! I had it in postion 3 trying to run a 540 finish mower. I put it position 1 last night and now it works great just like it supposed to. I didn't pay all that much for it and am happy with it now. Thanks to all that commented!
