After many years of service, my kubotas steering threw in the towel yesterday. The steering would turn right, but not left, steering would raise out of the housing. Decided its time to work on it, so I could finish my work.
Mind you, I am NOT the best mech, but im learning:D

problem

Im glad I kept the damage rug, works great for the workshop

I have ordered, on a wim a rebuild kit for a 7200 for the 8200:confused: I know that kubota no longer really supports the 82,92 series for steering. But, the steering for the 8200 was below 21" similar to the 7200.

The steering was siezed to the shaft, but had no puller. So out came the angle grinder with cutoff.

There was a definite water issue in the steering box. I cannot find a weep hole, if there was one in the 8200 box.

yup, broken bearing

begin dissasembly

cont.

plate removed, to see the adjustment screw for steering play, will be cleaned

not sure what the PO did, or if this is a factory deal, but HU???
to get this through the oil seal, I had to grind down this "collar" so it would go on through. Again, im not the BEST guy to be doing this, but I have a backup plan if this does not work.

shaft will be cleaned up.

If you have to go to plan "B" I have some ideas that might help. I have a B8200 (Gear) I bought new in 1980. A couple year latter I added power steering. If you saw the tractor there are very few clues it's not a factory setup. (I bought the complete steering shaft, valve, cylinder, hoses, etc off of a Toro 20HP mower.)

Good luck, it looks like you got it figured out!

Refill it with grease when you're done. Kubota sells EP00 grease for their LandPride equipment (part number 821-045C). It's really Shell Alvania and it's good stuff!

I'd be interested to know where you found the rebuild kit?

Nice work!

No rebuild kit. I was just wanting to check all lubricants, but the owners manual doesn't say anything about the steering gear box.

Where did you find the info ?

Great pics ! What lubricates the steering gear box ?

Thx, wozDaddy
Before, there was nothing. I was a two hand job to just turn the steering wheel. I ended up putting close to 1.5 qt of gear oil, 80W-90. I will assemble with the proper grease, but will add the gear oil.

As far as the rebuild kit, im going on a limb ordering a 62,72 rebuild kit. Shaft measures the same lenght, but I will not need the square shims, but the rest of the kit looks good to me.

I will let you know when it gets here and post some comparison pics as well.

Kubota uses gear oil in the boxes. The problem is, the seals eventually leak and the boxes tend to lose the oil over time.

The shaft seal under the steering wheel becomes worn and it allows water to follow the shaft down to the box when it rains. Then if the top seal on the box is worn, the water migrates into the box and eventually you end up in the situation you're in. This combined with the seal on the output shaft also leaking due to dirt and wear, allows the box to slowly empty of oil over time and the water takes its place.

The only way I know to prevent this from happening is to fill the box completely with something that will displace water. Hence the grease. I happened to notice the Shell Alvania grease while at the dealer one day and went home and researched it. It's an extreme pressure lubricant that seemed tailor-made for this application.

I have switched mine and so far it's eliminated the problem. Just fill the box up and you're done. Make sure to completely fill it and eliminate all the air pockets if possible.

There are numerous others also on the site that have done the same thing.

Good luck,

Steve

Well, i now have a bunch of 8200 steering box parts, that id be willing to sell:(

My rebuild came in and was hoping that there was a slim chance that it would work.

BUT, the engaging teeth on the steering do not mesh, shaft is a little smaller in dia, the seals provided are off by 1/16, the bearings are smaller as well.

Overall, $140 spent on the kit, and now im looking into a orbital to go a full power steering system.

Sorry fellas, I was hoping for the best, but ended up with a bunch of parts.

Will be posting some additional posting with the power steering as it comes along.

I was going to do that to my B7100.
It's not a cheap deal, but boy is it nice to have hydro steering.
You need to get a unit like this: Just make sure it's an open center type unit.
You can also buy the mount and shaft and steering wheel for fairly cheap too:

Would you have hydro lag if using FEL and steering at the same time while using if your using a 4 port steering box instead of a 5 port?

I assume you mean PB capability. No not really, but get the bypass/relief valve and you would have no issues at all.

Hi all. Yup, another newbe here.
I to have a B8200HST with steering issue. I don't mean to take over this thread but am wondering if anyone knows where I might get bearings and seals for the steering box assembly. The shaft is OK on mine but in need of seals in the box as well as the column. I have bearing that are OK, but yet I have many small balls loose in the bottom of the box but don't know where they came from. Any help would be super!!
Thanks

Hi Gramps24.......
Over the past winter I had to rebuild my steering box twice (long sad story ***55357;***56867;). I had good luck purchasing all the seals from my local kubota dealer but also found them on the web. All you need are part numbers. The thrust bearings and seals are common parts.

Hope this helps.....
