BX24 Rear End Lockup Lever Broken

Hi, I'm new here.

I'm looking to purchase an '06 BX24.

While checking it out this evening the seller mentioned to me the rear end lockup lever doesn't do anything. It has free movement up and down, but no locking action. -about 500 hours on the unit

He says he's been running it like it for a bit now with no issues. I've been doing some researching on the net and have discovered there is the possibility that some pins inside the rear end may be broken. -could even punch the case

Is there an easy way to diagnose whether this is a huge issue or a relatively easy fix? -I'll check for obvious case cracks

I'd be able to have the tractor brought over to my home to have some time to inspect this weekend.

Would like to be able to maximize my time in diagnosing the issue and appreciate any advice!

My Locking peddle had the same symptoms as yours but the diff was always locked.

The only way to know what is wrong is to open it up. This can get costly in parts and labor depending on what you find.

dom, welcome to OTT.

There are several components in the diff lock system starting with the foot pedal on through to the pinion. As olthumpa says the only way to find out what's wrong is to open it up. Start with the simple things first from the pedal lock arm, lock shaft, lock fork, etc. You may get lucky and find a missing pivot bolt or roll pin or, it may require replacing something expensive.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies! See, now I'm scared. I asked the fella I'm supposed to purchase it from whether we could do some detailed inspecting this weekend, but he seems hesitant/busy. He's asking 10k for the whole rig. After looking at the thread Olthumpa linked to I started getting sick to my stomach. There's no way I have the time to spend tearing into a "new to me unit." I'm just looking to get some yard work done. I'll tell ya'll the Kubota zero percent financing is starting to look pretty sweet. Perhaps I should get a BX25 off the showroom floor and call it a day!

I'm competent with a wrench, but lack the time and patience these days.

dom, possibly see if the seller would discount the sales price a thousand or so or if you are ok with current price tell him you will buy it at that price if he covers the cost to have a legit dealer do the repair. You will have gotten some valuable information if he won't put some skin in the game.

As an aside, I researched used machines for a couple years until I started dreaming in orange. I came to the conclusion that I would go new, yep the zero interest rate did factor in. We all have different financial priorities and I finally convinced my wife of mine. haha!

I doubt you could get a new BX25D for $16k, but man, I don't think you're far from it.........

A friend got a quote for a BX25D for about $17k last week. (I think $16,900 - but don't hold me to it)

If the guy is looking for $16k for his BX24 with 500 hrs and "issues," that's a no-go in my book.

Bare BX25 includes Tractor, LA240 loader, and BT601 backhoe with either 8" or 12" bucket, last years model, then add sales tax, insurance which is required for financing (your homeowners may cover or be available) and you may be between 17K and 18K. 3-pt hitch is not included and they will try to push a mid-mount mower but you may want that though it will add to the total.

I know what you mean about keeping second hand equipment running. Always wasting time fixing something versus getting the job done. I couldn't be more satisfied with my BX25. It has come at a time in my life when my three kids are through college and I'm eyeing retirement. That has helped me with my financial priorities.

As Steve said - 0% did it for me almost a year ago.

I looked at BX tractors 3 times since 2002.

The dealer I dealt with took my trade (JD-425) for about what I expected ($4k).

A BX2360 doesn't have a 'hoe - but I did get the loader, 51" front snowblower, 54" MMM - all which add up pretty hefty $.

I have 2 pals with BX25's and a '24 lives across the road from me. They all love 'em. Same tractor as mine, but with the 'hoe. Couple have mowers, blowers, one guy just uses his as a TLB.

There's a cool PA guy on here - Skeets. He'll hate it when I say I've had more seat time on my Kubota the last year than my Harley.

Never had so much fun going so slow!!!

Hey Steve, here's a quote I received today:

BX25D, this price includes tractor, loader and bucket, 3 pt. hitch arms, backhoe and a 12" bucket.

$18,974.00

That's out the door, with a supposed cash discount of $700.

Not sure on my homeowners insurance, I'd need to check.

Then I'd have to add the $700 back to the price because it's financed.

So $19,674

I'll pass on the mower for now. My grass area is pretty small.

I'm going to contact a few dealers and see what I can find.

What Steve said...I knew what I wanted - local guy didn't push extra stuff, but tax, insurance are considerations.

dom, you got me curious so I just pulled my sales receipt. Purchased last May BX25 (not a D). 16,900 less 500 rebate plus 218 Kubota processing fees and 5 yrs total insurance for 884 then sales tax and it was 18,552 delivered.

My dealer said they excluded the hitch to help keep cost down. Said would be a couple hundred bucks. Said I'd get when I get next rear attachment.

Good information. I just emailed the dealer I'm talking to back and he said indeed $19,674 was the best he could do.

So I know there is better deal somewhere.

Dealer is hard at $20,424 for new.

Says he has a 2013 demo model for $17,242 with 120 hours

I told him I'd be there Saturday morning with my trailer if he can hit $19,000 even for the new one.

Hope he'll come down to $19,000 so I can start digging!

I see you are in Front Royal, VA. I'm guessing the only digging you'll be doing is snow. In your neck of the woods I'll bet the frost depth is 2.5 to 3 feet. lol

For what its worth - a couple guys I know covered their machines via homeowner's policy - I think without an extra charge.

I did buy the insurance, and figured I'd check later - of course I didn't do it.

I'm paying mine down pretty quick - will likely have it paid for in 2 yrs - so I may not bother changing it now.

Just wanted to mention in case it could save some bucks.
