I have a friend of mine who hauls junk cars for a living and he started out with a pickup a car trailer and a cheapo winch from Harbor Freight. I know he ran that rig for several years an never had any issues with the cheapo winch from Harbor.

good to know, I am sure very little use time will be on this winch, and what you are pointing out helps in my decision. thanks again

Eric,

WOW!! Not really what I was talking about! Those prices are astronomical!!

I'm thinking a 40A dryer receptacle - or the automotive equivalent - and plug/cord set spliced to some #4 or #6 welding cable, or anything else that flexible. The winches I have will pull a ton or so; always enough to pull my 3000 lb tractor off a rock or out of the mud. I could double that with a snatch block if I was really serious. I think they drew about 20-30A.

If I'm right, we are talking about a B series compact tractor, not an M135.

Actually, that portable 12V battery with alligator leads would probably do the trick nicely, but then you have another thing to have to keep charged up and maintain. LONG leads and alligator clips would also do the job, but then it is a PITA to hook them up to the battery. I like the thought of a permanent receptacle better...

I have a Viper on my atv, and it's fine. But, you get what you pay for in winches, thats for sure. If I were going to use one real frequently, I would spend more on one with a series-wound motor- the cheap ones are permanent magnet. On a tractor, I doubt it will see much use, and probably not run for extended periods like you would see on an off road truck.
I really like the Milemarker hydraulic winches- a friend has one on his Land Cruiser in Haiti. They run off of a standard powersteering pump, but they are pricey.

I have an L2800 and use a winch on it all the time. I built a trailer hitch platform for a 9000lbs. Winch. I mount it to the pick up, front or back (I put a receiver hitch in the front of my truck...so I can pull it from either direction!). On the tractor I have the trailer receiver hitch for the three point...and like many others here, I have a receiver hitch attachment for the front. I only use it on the front for some light weight jobs...the rear I use to skid fallen logs out of tight places to the road...works great. I am careful with the set up so I pull with the length of the tractor on the pull line up. I am also careful to use heavy straps for securing the front to a tree or whatever to secure everything.

Both my truck and tractor have a wire plug set up for essentially dual #2wire cable from the battery to either the front or rear...I have two cables
...a short 6' and a 30' to reach the rear.

I have found that having the winch comes in handy for many small task to move things...and haul the tractor out of a mud bog one time.

9K winch sounds big...but it really is about medium size for a winch...and with its mount on a receiver hitch (it sits attached on the male hitch)...it can still be picked up by me and moved around.

The best safety tip...get a synthetic cable...if it breaks there is no energy in it...and it may save your limbs or life if it ever let go...
