I have a Zd28 zero turn and today the right rear started making a horrid grinding sound. I parked it and found that a lot of greasy fluid was dripping off the axle. I removed the tire, but can find nothing wrong from a visual inspection. Mind you, I’m an older female with little mechanical knowledge, but am trying. Any ideas?

Most ZD mowers I've worked on have final drive housings that are separate from the rest of the machine. Each axle housing has it's own oil reservoir and must be checked and serviced individually. They often get overlooked during servicing and sometimes bad things happen.

Like Fedup said.
Id start by checking the level in the final drive, then pulling the drain plug and inspect the oil for metal shavings etc.
These final drives used UDT or Super UDT fluid.
With the noise being reported, Id bet that final drive will need bearings, possibly gears.

Draining the UDT and refilling it with 80/90 greatly extends its longevity.

Thank you for your replys. I’ve attached photos as requested, but I don’t believe I’ve dug into the mower enough to be any help.

Drain the oil from your final drive into a clean container to check for metal shavings or chunks.

Is the final drive the one inside the rear axle case? i will look at the workshop manual. Yesterday I checked the fluid level there an it was hard to see, so I decided to check the left side level. The dipstick is wedged between the engine and fuel tank And I dont a
have a tool that is long enough and has a grip at the end.

Yes thats the case that the axle comes out of. Look at the far rear lower corner for the drain. Look at the rear upper side for the fill and dipstick (all in one). I use a suction gun to fill it. (Looks like a grease gun but has a hose on it about 1/2” diameter)
Its not too bad to check the level but about impossible to get a funnel into to refill, which is why I use the suction gun, and thats even somewhat messy.
