Maybe that's why it says DO NOT REMOVE right on the cover. Those are definitely a puzzle…have had fits trying to put one together before…good luck!
Do you have any idea where the short arm of the spring goes? The diagram doesn’t really show

Post a pic of what you did.Thats how I put it on. Just doesn’t seem to have the spring back like the original.![]()
Yes! My mistake for sure! Did it to my old MMM on my BX because it seemed to stifle the cut grass being throw out…went to put it back on when I sold the deck and encountered this problem. Bought a brand new Z422 and I’m leaving the rubber guard ON this time…seems to disperse the cuttings fine!Maybe that's why it says DO NOT REMOVE right on the cover.![]()

I got it in, definitely pressure required. Does the end that goes toward the deck rest at a certain place? That was my biggest question. It just seems like there isn't as much spring-back, as the original when I lift the cover. Thanks for your reply.you should have to put a good bit of force on it to install it.
basically I usually slip the pin into the guard a little bit, so I can still pull the guard away from the deck a little. Then using a plier, with the end of the spring that has 2 bends in it on the cover, twist the spring out at the bottom part so it puts downward tension on the cover, while kind of pulling the spring away just right such that I can then slip the pin through the rest of the cover and all in one motion hold the spring and slip the pin through the deck.
I've done a bunch of them and it's a fluid motion now after you do the first 10. That's the best way I know to describe how to do it.
you can also use the same method and twist the spring over the cover while the deck end is stationary, using the same type method (slip the pin through kind of while you're holding everything out away from the deck a little bit).
