Ok, so there I am clicking thru the Chinese Amazon, Ali Express.

I spot a “deal” on a “magnetic tape” style DRO and decide that for $156, I "can’t live” another day without it….:)

I do a tad bit of research, but find very few helpful videos regarding this style DRO, and even fewer that are on this particular brand.

I decide it’s “worth a 150 dollar” risk, and in about 6 days, it lands in my mailbox.

I do like the “compactness” of this one, as my shop is getting smaller and smaller everyday.

Also, I am “good” with this ones apparent simplicity. I like the one on the lathe. It is cool, and has “tons and tons” of “trigonometric functions”…….But the chance that I use any of them are well……Slim…..

Anywho, as I suspected, this one does not come with a “power supply”, so thats where I need some guidance/help.

Here is a pic of the instructions…...

IMG_4358.JPG

While my “Ching’lish” is ok…..My actual Chinese is non-existent.

The back seems to be labeled 12 to 24Volts, so I am guessing that a 12V DC power cord adaptor should work.

IMG_4357.JPG

I opened it up anbd they appear to be adhearing to the “red is positive, and black is negative” rule of thumb.

IMG_4339.JPG

This one has a black “thingy” on the end, just forward of the “plug end”…..

Can anyone tell me what that thing is, and if it is necessary?

My initial guess, is that I could cut it off and be fine, but I don’t want to cut if off, if it is some sort of “electricity filter” or something important…...

My “plan” is to cut off that round end, figure out which wire is positive, which one is negative, and “hard wire” it together.

I would like for someone to confirm that this is a good plan, before I accidently hook it up wrong and “Let all the smoke out of the box” …….I know how hard it is to "put that smoke, back in the box";)

Any thoughts?

Hi,

yes, I think the 12V should work.

The you can cut off the connector, just make sure to measure the polarity in case the readout is not reverse polarity protected.

The round blob is a ferrite to reduce radiated emissions. It has nothing to do with the functioning of the power supply, so you can remove it if you have to. You possibly emit more radio frequency noise, but to be honest, all short wave bands are destroyed because of all those switch mode power supplies and little processors everywhere anyway.

Is the power / amps rating high enough of the power supply? Again, you should not be able to do any damage anywhere, the supply should be short and overload protected.

The black lump around the cord is a ferrite noise suppressor, no need to cut it off.
Make sure the voltage output is under 24V without a load just in case.
Post a pic of the other side of the power pack so we can all see the rated output.
Be certain it outputs DC and not AC.

Good luck but you don't need much.

Google Translate app can show you in English, what is written on the instruction sheet (if you think that gives any useful information). You use your camera to show the app the words to be translated...
@Runs With Scissors Google translate of the picture shows that part is an instruction on how to set up multi-stage configuration. You can use your phone or drag and drop the image into your browser to translate it. Incredible.

Odds are that you're not going to find a clean 2-conductor arrangement if you cut off that plug. Many times the positive wire is in the center but the ground is just the braided shielding around it.

Since it sounds like your electronics skills aren't the greatest, I suggest getting something like this- https://amzn.com/dp/B08N44F6HC

Power supply with an inline switch so you can turn the DRO on/off and an adapter so you can easily run two wires between the adapter and DRO power connector.

You can clearly see in the pic that the power cable is twin leads, not shielded cable which is rarely used for power.

If you read his other threads you will be convinced that he is perfectly capable of adding a switch.

As someone said, ferrite choke. You SHOULD already know this since SHOULD have them on you CNC setup ( he said in a stern, fatherly voice). At least put one on the USB cable running to the LS control box from the laptop. Amazon has them in various quantities and cable diameters.
