Waterpump grease fitting

1966, 730 Case, has about 3500 HRS, I'm second owner and have had it 24 years.

A couple of weeks ago it was idling and suddenly a racket suddenly started and dashed to cut the fuel off. Engine would start up again and run just fine. This has happened two times since. Nothing seems visibly wrong. I think about it and determined I need to check out the power steering pump or the water pump. I'm leaning towards the water pump having some play, but I haven't check for any movement with no need and weather being frigid.

I'm considering ordering a new water pump to have on hand, but wondering if anyone has any experience applying grease to this type of pump? I'm thinking a couple pumps of grease may quit or quiet this thing down until Spring!

My (actual original) owner's manual and the Case IT manual do not mention anything about greasing the pump. I did find on line someone copied a service bulletin say to lubricate with regular gun grease every 60 hours of operation, and in bold letters: DO NOT USE SPECIAL WATER PUMP GREASE AND DO NOT LUBRICATE EXCESSIVELY.

All the time I've owned this tractor I don't think I have ever applied grease here.

Anyone have any experience with greasing water pumps?

If it's got a grease fitting, I would give it a couple shots and see what it does!

If it wobbles, I would replace it before it comes apart and takes out the radiator. Seen that happen all too often. Today it is only a wobble, but tomorrow it is an expensive repair that could have been avoided.

Engines that start to make 'funny' sounds NEED to be looked at PDQ !

Good friend called, msg says ...his '99 snowblower making funny grinding noise..he continued using it, calls again 'dead', brings it up, '1/4 shaft rotation' so busted conrod..... NOPE. 1st time in 30+ years I found the alternator coil had come off, selfdestructed...no big deal EXCEPT it TORE the mounting boss out of the block ! The coil I have, but no block... so I gave him my 'hot ' spare off the shelf
Sad thing is he'd just done an oil change 2 days ago.....

so... BEFORE you NEED the machine, find out WHAT has gone 'wonky' before it's a BIG bill to pay out....

I used to have a '78 Toyota 2wd PU, maybe the best vehicle I've ever owned. At about 170K, the original water pump started leaking, so I went to the local foreign car parts store and bought a lifetime guaranteed, made in the USA pump & installed it. Almost exactly 5000 miles later, I heard a funny noise at highway speed. Before I could pull off the road, the bearing locked, tearing the nose of the pump off, sending the fan into the radiator. It took out the radiator, shroud, fan, fan pulley, and the vacuum advance on the distributor. After a 100 mi tow home, I went back to the auto parts store and requested they pay for all the damage. They declined, (fine print said they weren't responsible for collateral damage) but they apologized and gave me a new pump.

Almost exactly 5000 miles later, I heard a funny noise at highway speed. Before I could pull off the road, the bearing locked, tearing the nose of the pump off, sending the fan into the radiator. It took out the radiator, shroud, fan, fan pulley, and the vacuum advance on the distributor, AGAIN. After another 100 mi tow home, (it happened within feet of the site of the first failure) I went back to the auto parts store and requested a refund. They declined, but said they would give me a new pump. After giving them detailed instructions on where to put that pump, I threatened to throw the bad pump thru their display case, and they refunded my money.

I then went to Toyota & bought a factory pump, (what I should have done in the first place) installed it, and it was still functioning perfectly when I sold the truck at 436,000 miles.

As far as what type to use, I would suggest, a red lithium, to me wheel bearing grease would be to stringy, and moly is just for pins and bushings. As far a quantity. I would start with 1/2 a shot, and go from there. You can always add more, but it's hard to get it out of the coolant, if it went that way.
