I've driven pickup trucks most of my adult life. Lot of you guys have.

Never had any kind of tonneau cover or truck cap. Wanted the truck box open for "stuff."

MANY years later still need that, but not as often.

Started looking at tonneau covers for my 2025 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew with 6'9" box.

IMG_8071.jpeg

  • Truck is parked outdoors 24/7/365.
  • I'd like something that can withstand snowload - we can get quite a bit sometimes.
  • I'd like something that allows all/most of the box to be used for tall stuff easily - - don't want to have to reconfigure a bunch of crap to put a larger load in the truck on a moment's notice.
  • I'd like something that affords some degree of security for stuff in the box.
I think I'm limiting myself to a hard tri-fold that goes up against cab window or rollup/retractable thing, but I've never had one or been around them much.

Any recommendations or suggestions for types/brands/systems that are good or bad?

Nice truck! I don't have a recommendation but @dirtydeed had a good suggestion in a previous thread. I've had tonneau covers in the past but will never buy another, and the same goes for truck bed caps. They all seem to act like vacuum cleaners and suck up all manner of dust. I do like DECKED products having both the drawer system in the F-250 and a toolbox in the F-450.

I put a Bakflip hard cover on my truck, very happy with it. It folds up out of the way when I need the bed. Pricy, but well worth it.

Thanks on the truck. I really like it.

I drove RED trucks for 30++++ years. Tough to get used to White.

Pretty Plain-Jane 2500 GMC "Pro," which is the Chevy Work Truck equivalent. Gas powered.

Why won't you ever have another tonneau? Problems with old one? 5th wheel?

I've driven pickups for 40 +/- years with no experience with these things - - school me....;)

I only looked a little online, and the Bakflip was the first one that intrigued me.

Folds right up to the back of the cab by the looks of it. Blocks the back window, but I'm not fretting about that. Mirrors have a purpose........ ;)

How long have you had one? What truck is it on? Do you fold it up to the cab often?

I have it on an F250, 8 foot bed. I have had it a bit over 3 years. It stays partly folded most of the time, up against the cab completely when I need all the space. I'll try to get some pics if you want to see them.

I have had the Bakflip on my Tundra for 8+ years, and my truck is parked outside the garage.

It has served me well. My paint faded after several years, but I just painted it with a spray can (removed the cover, placed it on a work table in the yard, taped the rubber areas - the whole process took about an hour for two coats plus extra time to dry in the sun). I will probably have to do it again in a couple of years. No snow here, but the cover is rated for 400 lbs. evenly spread.

I fold the cover all the way up when I transport two kayaks - so ~15 times a year. With one kayak, I leave the cover in place with the tailgate down.

I got a diamondback for my truck about 6 years ago. They are pretty much indestructable.

The heavy duty models will carry 2 ATV's on top of them. Mine isn't like that but you certainly don't have to worry about snow load.

I got it here,

https://diamondbackcovers.com

direct from the manufacturer. Check out their "outlet" link. That's where I got mine for a large discount. They do have different styles depending on how you need to use the bed. No leaks at all.

Thanks so much.

That's perfect and well-built but blocks the box from use for big stuff.

I've got Diamondback on my list.

They have a few offerings that look heavy duty.

Main reasons are access to the bed (F-450 needs gooseneck access) and the limitations that covers/caps create in capacity when folded or rolled up. It doesn't matter to me if the F-250 bed is full of snow, I can still open the drawers without the need to clear snow off. DECKED drawer system gives me lockable storage and a flat surface to put things on such as a JohnDow fuel tank. But I understand why many like tonneau covers.

Congratulations! That’s a good looking machine.

what engine and trailer towing set up did you get?

to your question, only thing I can offer is I have had 2 tonneau covers that I bought for myself and I have used or borrowed others trucks that had covers:

1. My brother had a dodge (he was an abused child😉) and he had a one piece fiberglass top that had struts and it lifted up from the back and the sides overhang the bed rails.
Pros: it never froze shut, and it made an awesome top to shoot prairie dogs off of and a key lock.
Cons: it was aweful inconvenient to get anything out of beyond an arm reach. Mostly water tight but wind at speed could blow water up over bed rail (no seal) and into the bed

2. friend had a soft cover
Pro, you could get it out of way pretty easy (snaps like a boat cover)
Cons: he had it broke into many times and eventually gave up on repairs. Not durable and not much to stop someone from ripping it open.

3. Last Ford I had an extang tri fold solid aluminum cover.
It sat up on top of bed rails and was simple clamp on install. Light weight easy on / off. However could not fold flat up to cab. Froze to bed rails if left out. Solution was sleep a putty knife in the cab and just have to love it a little. To open it had spring tensions utters and in general was water tight until the seals began to age between the panel. No lock. Tailgate had to open to unlatch the cover. It was fine except the tailgate would freeze to the seal. Had to unlatch from each side and if trailer connected walking back and forth each time forget something after you close tailgate. Install was super easy. (Just clamps up front to hold it on

4. Current truck has a Lomax and it is really low profile and required install of a rail but the cover sits really low. Thru fold solid aluminum diamond plate. So far it has not froze shut but it’s only been out a few times in the 2 months I have had it. TBD but so far no leaks. If folds flat to cab and had brackets/stays that hold it away from cab so as not to damage the cab or window. Open mechanism is a string and it opens easy from one side. If f the sting breaks I suspect I will ask @Runs With Scissors for some vocabulary lessons (he has mentored me previously😉). So far so good but me and lomax still on honeymoon. Opens from. one side though so that is nice. Install was easy.

I bought both from etrailer and very happy with their service and product videos and i would buy from them again.

to me something’s to consider are:
1. Do you want it to fold flat to cab and do you car if it touches the cab?
2. Latch mechanism and how you want to open. I think if not pulling a trailer maybe doesn’t matter.
3. Do you have a camera on top of your cab looking into the bed and can you use that if a tonneau cover folded up?
4. Do you have a goose neck or fifth wheel and camera and or can you fold up and still use the goose’s neck or have to take the cover on off. (Ease of install would be a factor here IMO if plan to take on and off)
5. Do you care how it locks?
6. Is park outside and deal with snow, rain, ice, I’d not want to have it freeze shut regularly.
7. If you have expensive coolers that you are attached to, get measurements that it will fit before buying the cover. It will change if you add a bed mat or liner. (My previous truck this created a constraint is why I mention).
8. Do you plan to set stuff periodically on top of the cover? Some have weight ratings, some don’t.
9. The way they fit may depend on if have a bed liner or not. Get that figured out first.

I am not sure you asked for all that or still reading, but that’s what I would sort out before dropping a grand or more.

if still reading I hope it helps.

congrats on the new truck!

RCW,
Like you I've had pickups for almost 50 yrs now. Never had caps or covers. But in the past few years I got tired of shoveling the snow out of the bed when I need it in the winter. Decided that in my 70's I want to make my life easier. I did not want a soft cover because of the snow load concern. I went with the Weather Tech . Hard fold up. I like that you can actually stand on it, has a low profile. simple hardware, and removes in seconds if you need the whole bed open. It was pricey but I figured I'd treat myself.

BAK-FLIP is the cat’s Meow. I’ve had 3 of them. They ALL worked very well.

They are almost completely waterproof…even in drive-thru car washes. Maybe a drop or two.. literally…at the tailgate.

On one of my trucks, I added a tailgate “seal” …(resembles a driver door seal but can be routed around the bed where the tailgate closes up onto it.) SOLVED. No water. (well… almost…. occasionally a drop or two…but LITERALLY… just a drop or two.

Bak-Flip. It also folds up against the rear window….and therefore when you carry large objects….and SLAM on the brakes…. whatever you’re carrying will NOT bash and break your rear window because the BAK-FLIP PROTECTS THE REAR WINDOW.

I have the BAKFlip MX4 on my 2500HD. Absolutely would do it again. It is in four sections vs 3 on a lot of trucks which makes it a bit easier to fold as these 2500HD's are fairly tall. I also, opted for the T-Rail and ended up with a rack that I take on and off dependent on my uses.

I have an Extang rollup tonneau cover with snaps. It's been great since 1999. Everyone says I should have, need, a tri fold hard shell...UNTIL I say 'fine YOU buy , YOU install it' !
Sure it's over 25 years old but keeps snow out of the bed and people wanting to borrow my truck as nobody want to put the cover back on.

I have Diamondback on my Gladiator and love it. Takes about 15 minutes to take it off the few times I needed to. Completely water proof, only thing is it will freeze to the tail gate, wax the seal real good helps keep it from freezing.

Diamondback comes off very quickly if desired. The panels on the HD one are only 40 lbs on an 8’ bed.

I had an Extang tri-fold hard tonneau cover on my F150 for the entire 7 years I owned it. Liked it very much. Never leaked, and very stout...I was able to walk around on top of it without it giving at all.

I had a Bak-Flip for years. Overall very happy with it and it's taken some abuse. Folded up it doesn't take up much of the bed.

Can hold as much snow as you can pile on.

Everything stays mostly dry under it but there can be small amounts of water - even from condensation.

Can freeze to the tailgate.
