I have used this technique (not just with MIG, but also with TIG). It works, but sometimes there are issues.
Step 3 of the article is spot on. I learned the hard way about too much heat, warping, and shrinking of metal!
Preheating the metal with a torch (or similar) and help also - especially on thick or very porous metal - like from rust.
