I Rode the bike to work yesterday. I pull it into the garage after work and take my helmet of. No sooner than I turn around I have 3 neighbors standing in front of me. Neighbor Dick, Rich (Both are Salt of earth and 80+ years old) and Saku (the youngster among us.)
Dick needs a wheel barrow tire patched, all I have is Slime ( for bx25 front tires :) ) so we take care of that.
Rich needs some engine coolant and threatens to replace what he uses, to which I replied “get this stuff out of my life.” I’ve had that stuff bouncing around the garage forever. -I do my best to take care of the old boys.

Now Saku? well he goes and gets 12+ yards of mulch delivered that he is going to wheel barrow down over the hill. Oh he gave it a hell of go with that little dent he made in the pile, but soon enough he probably figured he should come talk to me. Which he did (sweatin'). First thing he asked me is how much I would charge him. First thing I asked him was how cold his beer was.
About an hour later we finished moving the pile. I wished I would have paid more attention to what that Lemon beer was he gave me. It was cold, and Damn it was good!

Moral of the story- Pay it forward. You may need a solid one day yourself.

Good story... and I always pay it forward.

1) Helped the neighbor remove a tree 2 weeks ago. But that keeps leaves out of my yard too. The 'Bota was good for moving the chunks.

2) EVERY kid in my neighborhood knows to come here to get their bikes fixed.

3) I plow at least 4 driveways during the winter, because the owners have heath issues.

Hopefully when I get old... they will remember. ;)

I have no neighbors! Really- the nearest is about a mile away.
Otherwise, I do agree with treating people with dignity, respect, and benevolence. Not because it may come back to you, but because it's the right thing to do.
I laid 400' of laminate last Saturday for a single mom in our church (she is raising 7 kids on her own, doing a fantastic job of it, and two of them are in our youth group), and I installed new engine mounts in a Jeep, this week, for another single woman in our church. She was concerned about taking it to a shop and getting taken advantage of, as a single, older woman. I didn't mind working on it- it gave me a chance to scour over a Rubicon and play with it some. So, sometimes there are return benefits!
I am fortunate to have a flexible job, and able to work from home, which allows me to be available for the random opportunity to serve others.

Based on the character of people on this forum, I'd imagine that the majority do their share of helping others.

Yes sir ;) Food and Beer are good motivators for me :D:D Gotta hook up the wood splitter to the truck and run next door to the neighbors. Neighbors are in there mid 70's with knee replacements and bad backs. They had a tree get blown over while I was out of town. They had someone come in and cut it up, but needs to be hauled off. Neighbor also found out I have a welder. Some of there metal lawn chairs are starting to fall apart. So, I'll end up dragging them to the house and tacking them back together for them as well. :D:D

For the neighbors, I don't ask for anything in return. They take it upon themselves to keep an eye on my place while my wife and I are at work. Hell, one of the neighbors blocked our driveway and scared our son half to death when he walked out of the house and was met with a gun :D:D He had stopped by the house to grab something, but had a friends vehicle instead of his car :D Neighbors apologized and wife and I said no worries and took them out for dinner :D:D

On both of which I wholeheartedly agree.

All of the above is fine. Only don't let it get too far. For example and you are not home, if he comes and borrows your trailer that has electric brakes and he has no controlled, well it ain't good. Another guy borrowing it didn't hook up the safety chains. Comes back with chains wore out from dragging on the road. At least they said sorry. How's come they get by without a ticket by not hooking up lights when I get stopped with a burned out bulb one block from home.

I'm not sure. I see it all the time though. Guys running down the road with no lights. Or a load not strapped down. Seen some with trailers not fit for the highway. Cop goes by them and doesn't give them a second look

Personally, I don't let anyone but my father in law use my trailer. Had my son call and say he and his buddy were gonna stop by and grab it. I said nope, you need to wait for me. Sons buddy was gonna haul it with a vehicle that only had a 3000lb towing capacity. Didn't have the correct ball for it either. Trailer would have ate up half that with out being loaded  The buddy thought that since he had a hitch and ball he could tow anything. After I got over there and got loaded. I took them through the scales at a truck stop. Trailer weighed 6,000 lbs. That was a pretty good wake up call for them :D

Your paying for help before you ever need it,, sometimes it work other times not so much..When I started riding, there were some old guys I rode with, and I was told over and over you live by the number 3,, being a dumb kid i askd what that was,,When some one does you a good deed, you are required to do good for 3 others and ask nothing in return, just an old biker thing,,
But I have carried or at least tried to do that in all of my life and do for anyone that needs help,, maybe one day it will come back

Hey Skeets. I get down thru your town every year or so on the Harley on the way to Mountainfest. Good times. Great riding down that way. Had to help my new young neighbor out the other day. Looked over and he had Jeep buried with open trailer with his Harley loaded on. He was in the middle of his yard in March with snow just melted off!! Buried to the axles. Was so buried had to unkook trailer and pull out to the drive. Then had to really work to get the Jeep out.

Well, it's a principle of life. You get what you sow, more then you sow, later then you sow. And so it works even if you "do no good".

Life is much more enjoyable being able to help out a neighbor or friend in need. I willingly help my neighbors with my Bota if they need it. In return I get the satisfaction of helping out and sometimes get a plate of homemade cookies or maybe a $20 for fuel. They in turn offer to help me if I need a hand on a project and keep an eye on the house when we are away.

I know I'm an old fuddy-duddy but what the heck is "pay it forward"
From a movie. It means do things for people before they ask and without expecting to be repaid. The idea is that they will do the same for someone else at some point.

i would rather plow a neighbour's driveway for free then go plow a strangers driveway for money. I give firewood to people that genuinely need it. Had a load and was on way to give it to a friend when a guy in a parking lot wanted to buy it. I declined to sell it. "Why would you give firewood away when you can sell it"

Five minute fix on a car, no charge.can sure make someone's day.
Customer drives patients to chemo and dialisis a couple times a week. Comes with her own oil and filter and i change oil for free. Trying to do my part in a small way.

A few neighbors are thrilled i work at home, can get car fixed cheap and walk home.

My dad was always fixing stuff for friends and neighbors. His motto to me:

"We do because we can."

Share the gifts you have.
