There is no temperature gauge on my L275DT. Looking online I see posts by people who claim that their temperature gauge is not working on their L275...maybe they have a later model or something.

It's hard to imagine that there wouldn't be one by design. Regardless, I'd like one. Temperature sensors are usually in the block, which initially I'm hesitant to do, but if convinced that's the way to go, I'll look into it.

Any recommendations on how to best do this?

None of the L275's ever came with a factory temp gauge.
It's very simple to add an electric model, harder with mechanical (as it does not fit the hole in the head).

It goes it the right side rear of the head which has a plug in it. ;)

Cylinder head temp is definitely the way to go. With the upper hose deal, you'll never know if the thermostat sticks closed until it's cooked!

Don't ask how I know.

True....true!

But it is great on those that dont have thermostats! :D:)
thermosyphon systems....only real adv....no thermostats! And sometimes they are a PITA too!

O'Reilly Auto parts has a bag of brass fitting hanging on a wall near their gauge display. In that bag is the fitting that fits the tapped hole in the head. Seems like it's a 16mmx 1.25 thread pitch. You have to buy 5 to get the one!!

The mechanical sending unit screws into that fitting, and that fitting goes into the head.

Be sure to pull the plug first to check the size, quite a few of the holes are not large enough for a standard mechanical gauge bulb. ;)
