I am in the market for a stump grinder that doesnt break the bank. I was set on the Woodland Mills WG24, but when I emailed them they said that since my L6060 has 51 PTO HP, it would run the risk of damaging the Grinder or tractor (grinder is rated for 15-45 HP).

Does anyone have any suggestions for a grinder for the 6060 that is in that same price range (Under $3k)?

Thanks

I'm not really sure how a 45hp rated cutter can damage a 50hp tractor. Also, with proper overload protection (shear bolt, slip clutch) you should be able to run that grinder with an unlimited hp prime mover.

Yeah, Im kinda with you on that. I have only had my machine for a year and its my first one so I dont really know anything. :)

I would think with the slip clutch (im not sure if the WG24 has any shear bolts) and only 6hp over the rating it would be fine. '

Im taking all opinions....

The WG-24 has a slip clutch on the included PTO shaft so the torque past that clutch is limited by the clutch regardless how much is coming out of the tractor. The grinder flywheel hangs from a hinge when in use so if you feed it too fast it swings back instead of putting excessive force on the flywheel. I suppose if you somehow managed to get it in such a bind you were continuously slipping the clutch for some time that would burn up the clutch on the PTO shaft.

I guess I’ll defer to the manufacturer on whether you can run it or not, but like McFarmall I’m having a hard time understanding why you can’t.

Well, for the record I went a head and ordered one. Ive found on other forums and reviews a few people with tractors in the same HP range as mine that use them with no issues.

The WG24 should be awesome behind your tractor! Just don't use it as a metal detector like I inadvertently did. :ROFLMAO:

I made my stump grinder with mostly junk I had laying around, used an old Honda gx390 for the engine and made a dramaticly overkill cutter head with the help of my machinist buddy.
A manually operated grinder appears to be significantly faster than a PTO stump grinder on tractors with 2 to 3 times the HP. And the way stump grinders break stuff I wouldn't really want one on my tractor.
Using a stump grinder hanging off the tractor it's like you are always taking off too much, going too fast or barely taking any off. With a manually operated one you can dig in and stay on the stump using the full HP of the attached engine to make little pieces of stump until you have to reposition. Also my tractor can't get through a 36 inch wide gate.
