Today I went to get on my b7100, put my left foot on the step on the left side and grabbed the steering wheel to pull myself up and the steering wheel came off in my hand. I almost destroyed myself, there aren't a lot of soft things to land on. How do I put it back on and keep it on?

The answer to that depends on what all you broke when you used it for a handhold.

Did just the steering wheel come off or did the steering shaft come off with it? You probably already discovered this but the steering wheel should never be used to pull yourself on or off the tractor. A few years back someone posted his experience doing the same thing. He has several hundred dollars damage and several hours work to repair the cast aluminum dash that broke. Pictures are worth 1000 words.

Looks like you need to clean the threads and find a nut the fits. Then put the wheel back on.

Aside from the fact that you fell, you got real lucky. It is possible to break the steering shaft housing by pulling yourself up on the tractor. That would have been a lot more expensive that the nut, washer, and spring.

Several years ago my steering wheel came off while mowing.😳

Thankfully the nut and washer were contained by the wheel’s hub cover…

I suppose that's true. ANYTHING is possible. But what are the chances? I think I use the steering wheel on my BX for that same purpose. Perhaps just to maintain balance when the MMM is on. Not sure.

BUT if a normal person could destroy the steering mechanism by just pulling on it a bit...must be greatly under designed.

Next time I get into my van I will have to pay attention to see if I use the "steering wheel assist" function. LOL

In the OP's case, it is obvious the nut fell off and he did not notice it...and eventually the steering wheel worked it way up the splined shaft...after who knows how long?
