I pulled my starter apart to check out the brushes since it is intermittently hesitating to turn over when turning the key. There was a spring missing under the end frame cap. I've never had the starter apart so it's been working like that for a good number of years.

I have a spring assortment kit I can find something to work. It doesn't look like it needs much force based on how puny the spring looks in the picture below from my WSM. It looks like it goes below the retaining clip or washer as they call it judging by the instructions. It seems like it'd be better to press the bottom side of the cap.

If anyone here can clue me in, I'd appreciate it.

edit: Before doing this, I had cleaned by battery grounds as well as the + wiring connections on the starter hoping that was the problem, but no luck. There was that one short wire connection on the starter that I couldn't get to before that looks pretty bad, so maybe that's the problem since the brushes look good.

Edit #2: Looking at it again, the spring has to go up against the cap and push down on the washer. I should be good.
