Hi All.

i replaced all the seals on the front axle (4WD) of my L3010 when one of the infamous seals (TA14013040) was leaking. This is the seal that seals on the bevel gear case.

After about 100 hours, the new seal was leaking. I noticed that there was pitting on the bevel gear case, but it was minor. I'm assuming that the new leak is coming from oil bypassing the seal via the pitting on the seal surface on the bevel gear case.

From what I understand, there MAY have been an original two piece seal for this application - (maybe not). The fine folks at the Kubota dealership could not confirm this and when I ordered a new replacement seal, it was just a one piece seal.

Question #1. Is there a two piece seal available for this application?

Question #2. If I have to use the one piece seal, would a Speedi-Sleeve help and has anyone used a Speedi-Sleeve in this application. The Speedi-Sleeve would close off the pitting on the bevel gear case diameter. I'm wondering if there would be enough room for both a Speedi-Sleeve and the one piece seal.

Thanks in Advace.

If the problem is surface pitting on the housing bore there are plenty of products that can be used to fill in the voids,

I suspect you are experiencing what I went thru….. a couple years ago …(I”ll try to find a link and edit this post)… My Left Front bevel case seal was leaking.

The Parts diagram showed it as a two-piece seal…. so I was mislead and and ended up destroying the new seal trying to install it.

IN ACTUAL FACT…it is a ONE-piece seal…but consists of an ASSEMBLED two-pieces. It is replaced as a SINGLE UNIT. But one might be fooled because of that parts illustration.

Bottom line: Make certain you remove ALL the old seal …and install the new seal as a single-unit.

Be certain no dirt or damage to the surfaces when you install the new seal. And I recommend you use 80W90 gear oil rather than UDT/SUDT in that front axle. It’s less expensive, and less likely to leak, and is specifically approved by Kubota.

<edit> Here’s a link to ONE post I made…which contains another link to the original article. Hope it helps.

Thanks GeoHorn.

I just checked and the shop (not Kubota) where the seal was ordered and they gave me an aftermarket replacement (I thought the package looked odd).

I have the proper Kuboto seal and will first give that a try before looking at a Speedi-Sleeve. However, when I have the unit apart, I will see if indeed a Speedi-sleeve will fit between the lip seal and o.d. of the housing. Speedi-sleeves are .011" thick and I have some .01" plastic shim stock that will give me an idea if this is possible.

The Speedi-sleeve seems like a quick no-brainer solution to what appears to be a common problem with these 4WD Kubotas.

The style of seal you are referencing does not rotate against either of the housings. It is a unitized seal and the sealing element is internal. The internal rubber ring seats against the "shaft" of the upper bevel gear case and stays fixed to that case. The outer rubber ring is pressed into the lower gear case and is fixed to that case. The halves of the seal rotate inside of one another.
There will be no room for a speedi sleeve. If pitted bad enough you can clean the pitting and treat the rust then either fill the pitting with epoxy or use a thin film of RTV when installing the seal in the housing.

We used to fill the pitting in liner bores and the housings for final drive seals with Belzona then sand them back to shape.

Ruger1980 - OK, this makes sense to me. I just had a very close look at the seal and sure enough, it has an inner seal that rotates within the outer seal. This is the answer I was looking for. I'm not sure if the aftermarket seal (which is leaking) was indeed a two piece seal - (I'm assuming not as the Kubota seal TC230-13040 has a lot more heft to it than I remember on the aftermarket seal). THANK YOU.
