I have a question, the one grand daughter bout a new Nissan a little over a year ago, and it only has like 14K on it.
Yeah its her first and her baby anyway the muffler has broken in front between the CAT and the muffler. So she took it back to the dealer, and they told her it was not under warranty because,,, IT IS A WEAR ITEM!!!
WTF??
She didnt hit anything I looked, it is rusted through looks like an old tin can.
So she is really upset cause they quoted her a zillion bucks to replace it.
I feel if it rusted away the warranty should cover it.
But she doesnt want me going down causing a big ruckus
,,, who me ???
So what say you?
Should it or not?

I might just to vent, but I doubt it will do any good. This sort of denial of warranty coverage for one bogus reason or another is becoming more & more common. I know a young tech/service writer who has worked for various dealers/brands who says he is aware of at least two Kias (100,000mi powertrain warranty) with burned up engines that are not covered. Seems this particular model has a bad temp sensor that never shows the engine overheating until it locks or blows up, but it isn't covered the under warranty because the temperature sensor is not part of the engine or drivetrain. WTF? The sensor is part of the dashboard according to the dealer. WTF?
(note to self: Don't buy the Kia!)

Might be able to get the muffler fixed and welded at a mom and pop shop for less then $150.

Bought a receiver hitch and had a shop install it on my f150. I had installed dual shotguns on the back for the exhaust. They moved the exhaust and welded it up from the cat's back for $85

In my book, that should definitely be covered under the factory warranty. As for the 8 yr. emissions warranty, they may deny it because it's after the cat. If all else fails, like Daren said, a local muffler shop should be able to weld in a new pipe pretty cheaply.

It sounds like she mainly drives short distances in the car so the exhaust system doesn't get hot enough to boil off the water.

I would try contacting Nissan directly as this can sometimes budge shady dealerships.

Depending on the labor agreement between the dealer and their technicians is often indicative of their policy on honoring warranties. Some dealers pay flat rate, some pay a percentage of hourly labor billed, some pay a percentage of hourly labor billed with warranty work being given out evenly throughout the work force and payed for at a lower rate. The manufacturers do not pay out shop rate for warranties on the products the dealers sell. Part of the "cost of doing business" in having a dealership. Due to this it is often in the dealerships best interest to deny warranty claims when they can.

At any rate it can't hurt.

Granddaughter. Nuf said. Some dealers do not go the extra distance to find warranty coverage. I will point out that young women are quite often taken advantage of by service writers. I cant count how many times women have come to my shop with a ridiculous list for rad, trans, and brake flush. All not due by owners manual reccomendations. What gets me is one i found they didnt even touch the cabin air filter.

My best friends daughter was furious when i pointed out 12,000 km's between oil changes and dealer told her 5,000. 9 oil changes versus 4 or 5. Convinced her 10,000 was the norm for synthetic oil.

Start with the service manager, have them show where it states exhaust is a wear item.

Me and the kid just got back,, went to the the service manager,, a young dick head smart ass punk condescending little jackoff. He looked at her and said I TOLD YOU IT WASNT COVERED. She grabbed my arm as I started around the counter,, he said I ll call the cops,, I said call the store manager instead, very sweetly between my clenched teeth. Well the punk calls him and he comes down,, an older fella about my age, and asked whats wrong. And I explained to him what happened and how she was treated before and just now. Anyways I looked at his right hand and said nice ring, he said yours too. He said come in to my office,, we sat and he told her not to worry because he was going to write it up as a CAT failure and replace the whole nine yards. SO she takes it in tomorrow after work, and as we were leaving, he had that young punk in his office and I swear they heard him out on the highway.
Thanks guys

Skeets, glad to hear of the great outcome :D:D I quit using the local green dealer for repairs at work because of the service manager there. We can bus our equipment 30 miles north and get better quality repairs for half the price :D

It baffles me how some young guy can be so cocky, knowing full well it will get him punched out or fired. Service manager is there to help the customers, and represent the product. Customer satisfaction is truly how most businesses keep their doors open.

Myself, trying to keep people happy is important to me. Wasnt my fault the axle was siezed in the hub and took 5 hours to replace a ball joint. I charged 1/2 labour simply to fit the od guy's budget if nothing else. I wont get rich doing that, but it wont break me and i can sleep at night.

Glad you got satisfaction. Might be a good idea to drop in when granddaughter leaves car,in case SomeOne decides to give her a hard time.
Scratch that, he wont.
Good chance he may not even be there.

Unfortunately, most car dealers and their repair facilities suck, big time.
I,ve got a friend that is a mechanic at a local GM dealership, and they were told, in no uncertain terms, that IF they didn,t peddle 5K worth of parts each per month, they would be replaced.
I,ve seen way to many instances were, especially young girls and women have been fed a line of BS about having worn out parts on their vehicles, and the car is not safe to drive out of the shop, as it is.
I tell them all to get the diagnosis in writing, itemizing parts and labor required, and at least get a second opinion from someone else they feel they can trust.
Glad you were able to help this young lady out, and hopefully it will be another life lesson she can pass on to many of her friends before they get scammed.
Hopefully that dirtbag that treated her badly is out looking for a new job, in another field that doesn,t require customer service.

When i was at the ford dealership, there was no pressure whatsoever. But the service writer was pushing everything he could. We didnt see eye to eye. He was also the guy that wrote up the bills, essentially he was in charge of my payroll.
I knew for a fact i was getting screwed out of hours, but being an electrical/ diagnostics tech i was pretty much on straight time.

Guess he got in troube with a couple techs for the same thing after i left, and is now delivering pizza or something.

Was an awesone job, 50 miles each way to work sucked.
