Shifter 'knob" removal B6000E

I need to.remove the original shifter slip cover on the end of.the shifter (where your hand goes) to.replace.the boot.
Before I try brute force and tear something up... is there any hint or trick to getting it to slide off without destroying it?

The shifter shaft is not threaded, it just pulls off. You might have to use a small rubber mallet to tap if loose.
