Simple question. When replacing hydraulic oil sight glass on a L2850 GST on the left side of the transmission, do I put oil on the rubber seal or just put it in dry?

I agree with the silicone suggestion. I put off replacing the sight glass on my previous L3410 for a very long time because I mistakenly thought it would be a difficult and messy job... Ended up being the easiest repair I have ever done!

Yep, it's about $7 piece and a 2 minute job. Tech at Coleman's suggested a bit of silicon, just as other have mentioned.

Thanks guys! I had thought of silicone also. Removed the old one today and it was cracked. I will use silicone. Thanks for the quick response and advice!

Can you tell me how you removed the sight glass? I have recently noticed that there is a leak at my site glass. Also, can anyone tell me if a coloring additive is available for hydraulic fluid, seeing the line in the glass is very difficult.

It's just pressed in, put a screwdriver or small pry bar under it and pop it out!
drain at least some of the hydraulic fluid out of it before you pop it out or you'll have a heck of a mess.

You can get hydraulic fluid dyes, here is one that works, caution a little goes a LONG ways. ;)

I don't know if this was smart but my sight glass was leaking (small leak) around the outside of the glass. The glass itself was okay. I cleaned off the oil with brake cleaner spray and mixed up some JB Weld and squeezed it around the glass with a tooth pick. Finished it off using a Q-Tip and pushed on the weld . Let it stay overnight and hasn't leaked in a year so far.

Service guy I talked to said not to use anything too permanent after I suggested using gasket maker on our L4300D. Said some kind of epoxy would do fine, but wasn’t really specific. I guess it will matter if you ever have to take it out again.
