This is an old time yankee mosquitoes repellent or 'fly dope' as its called up north here:This formula was also sold as the 'old woodsmans' repellent
Combine in a 32oz bottle:
1)20 oz of spring water
2)1 tsp of lavender oil
3)2 tsp of roofing tar
4)1 tsp of lemon juice
5)1 tsp of asbestos powder(mansville brand works the best)
combine and shake well. Apply liberally...

Probably a woman repellent also. I wouldn't be using any asbestos dust for anything. If you do make this stuff, don't breath it! A good old bottle of cutter will do it except for Alaska.

The first mosquito to hit you in Alaska will skim off the repellent and the swarm behind it gets you.

I usually spray the Cutter around my neck on my clothing, waist, hatband, elbows. Haven't had a tick bite yet.

Umm I don't think asbestos powder is readily available off the shelf anymore. And if it was I sure as hell wont be rubbing it all over me. Not sure how this cocktail is supposed to work, what does the roofing tar do??

I can totally see this working.

You'll be inside, on the computer all summer trying to find asbestos powder and won't be anywhere near mosquitoes.

I have used a different product that used 'permethrin'. I sprayed it on my shoes, socks, and lower part of pant legs - knees to bottom hem. After walking through the tall grass checking my electric fence I found dead wood ticks on my socks and in my shoes, so it does work - but after the first wash of the clothing it no longer was effective. Of course I have walked that same line and used duct tape to remove about 70 to 80 ticks that were crawling on me - none stuck.

I was talking with my mom the other day about this cocktail and she was telling me that Avon Skin So Soft works amazingly well on deter bugs. A family friend of ours who is a hard core hunter swears by it in the woods. He's tried every bug repellent out there and says nothing comes close to the Avon.

A friend of mine from Maine says Vicks Vaporub is great for repelling black flies.
